The arrival of the Thais
The Thais came from southern China, and settled in the Khmer area. Buddhism was introduced around the same time to INdia and Sri Lanka. Buddhism began replacing Hinduism in the region. -

European powers started colonizing Southeast Asia. The Europeans were lead by Portugal. Europeans came in search of spices and other trade goods in the region. -

Ferdinand Magellans discovery
Ferdinand Magellan reached the Phillipeans and clamed the islands for spain. The spaniards who followed came to collonize, trade, and spread Roman Catholism. The religion remains faith in the Phillipeans today. -
Arrivel of Dutch traders
Dutch traders drove the Portuguese out of much of the region. Portugal kept only the small islands of Timor. The Dutch gained control of the tea and spice trade on what became the Dutch EAst Indies, now Indonesia. -
The period of French and British colonization
The British and French set up colonies with plantations, railroads, and mines. Many people from China and India came to work in the colonies. The British and French spread Christianity as well. -
U.S. ownership of the Phillipines
The United States entered the region when it won the Phillipines from spain after the Spanish-American war. Colonial powers ruled most of the region. Only siam, now THailand, was never colonized, but it lost land. -
The WWII Japenese invasion of the Philippines
Japan invaded and occupied most of Southeast Asia. After Japan lost the war, the United States gave the Philippeans independence. Soon other people in the region began to fight for their independence. -
The civil wars in Cambodia
Civil wars also raged in Cambodia and Laos. The communist forces took over both countries. The government in Cambodia was brutal, causing more than one million deaths. -
The Vietnam War
Vietnam helped overthrow Cambodias government. this event sparked further fighting which continued till the mid 1990's.The United Nations helped Cambodia achieve peace. -
The emergence of Khmer civilization
The Khmer were the most advanced early civilization in the region. The Khmer controlled a large empire in what is now Cambodia. The remains of Angkor Wat, a huge temple complex the Khmer built in the 1100's, reflect their advanced civilization and Hindu religion.
