Inventions of the Industrial Revolution
-
Threshing Machine
This was made in 1786 ny Andrew Meikle. -
The First Spinning Mill
The first spinning mill in America was made in 1793 by Samuel Slater. -
Cotton Gin
The cotton gin was invented by Eli Whitney in 1793 and patented in 1794. It was important because it separated the cotton fibers from the seeds. It was much faster and more efficient than doing it by hand. Unfortunately, it increased slavery and was a cause of the American Civil War.
Challenge: The cotton gin is still used today. We have figured out how to improve it and make it more efficient and faster so that it makes more in a short amount of time. -
Interchangable Parts
The interchangable part was invented by Eli Whitney in 1797. An interchangable part was a part of an object that was completely identical to a part of another of the same object. So if the parts were to be switched the object would work the same, such as a rifle. The interchangable made it so a blacksmith didn't have to make a part identical to the broken piece. This made the repair and the production of an object easier but it also eliminated jobs. -
Steam Powered Locomotive (Tom Thumb)
This was invented in 1803 by Richard Trevithick. -
Steamboat (Clermont)
This was invented in 1807 by Robert Fulton. This demonstarted the viability of using steam propulsion commercial river transportation. It brought new meaning to transportation.
Challenge: This being applied in our modern society by learning from it and improving the quality. Fom this invention we have managed to build bigger and better ships. -
Mechanical Reaper
This was invented in 1834 by Cyrus McCormick. This was used to cut and gather crops aster than doing it by hand. This sped up production of food because of the efficient and non-strenuous work.
Challenge: This is still used today except we have improved it. Now it is more effecient and less strenuous so that production rates are higher. -
Steel Plow (Lightweight Plow)
This was invented in 1837 by John Deere. -
Telegraph
This was invented in 1837 by Samuel Morse.
Challenge: Although it is very outdated the telegraph was the biggest invention in communication in that time. We have now evolved from the telegraph to phones by studying how the telegraph works. -
Photography
This was invented in 1839 by Louis Degurre. Degurre invented a way to make a silver, chalky mixture to darken when exposed to light. Degurre exposed this to the public and it became a hit.
Challenge: We have improved in the subject of photography by inventing easier and more mobile cameras. Also, we can now take pictures in color.
