the first school for the deaf was opened in Connecticut by Thomas Gallaudet. For the first time students with a disability were given the opportunity to be educated in the United States of America. The first public school for students with an intellectual disability was open in Massachusetts. This stepping stone marked a progress to educate students who were excluded from learning. Even though the school was labeled as a public school, they the students were still separate from the general education body of students. -
Brown v. Board of Education court case ruled that "separate is not equal." This case focused on race, which later on helped with the support of disability rights. The idea that students who had disabilities had the right to equal educational opportunity like everyone else. -
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act was made so that person can't discriminate against students who have disabilities in schools. The Act required schools to provide any accommodation necessary in order for students to learn. This law in fact helped students with disabilities to not be separated but rather placed within regular classrooms. -
The Education for All Handicapped Children Act is a law that requires all public schools to educate all children that has a disability. This Act also intriduce the LRE- Least Restrictive Environment. Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) replaced the earlier laws and helped strengthened student rights. Individualized Education programs (IEP) is required and inclusion when it is most appropriate. This ensures all students with disabilities receive free public education. -
American with Disabilities Act protects students with disabilities from discrimination in public spaces and also in school. This Act also makes sure that transportations, buildings and communication have full access to disabled students. This Act supports inclusion not just in the classroom but on the outside wherever a student with disability may go. -
No Child Left Behind law requires schools to include all students with disabilities in testing. This law held schools responsible for the students academic progress and made sure they were not ignored. -
IDEA Reauthorization was updated to better support the numerous students who had disabilities. It made sure that teachers were qualified and made sure they were access to the general education curriculum. Students with a disability were able to learn in a least restrictive environment (LRE). -
Every Student Succeeds Act replaced No Child Left Behind but it continued to protect students with disabilities. it supports accountability on everyone's path and inclusive education for all.
