The original University Elementary School was founded in Chicago by John Dewey. With his first wife, Alice, Dewey traveled to Japan giving 200 lectures. His influence became international during the 1920s after living in China for over 2 years where they called him "Mr. Democracy" and "Mr. Science". This influence also got Chinese educators to try to encourage creativity and virtue in students.
