For 36 hours the confederates bombed the fort with there cannons. The Union later surrendered the fort to the confederates. That was the first engagement of war, which ended with the rebels wining. -

This battle was 2 days. This battle was one of the bloodiest and largest battle in American history. The level of violence in this battle shocked the North and South alike. This battle was won by the North, mainly because they had more men and the southern soldiers were more exhausted than the north's. -
Antietam, MD
The battle was only 1 day but over 23,000 men fell, making it the bloodiest day in American History. This battle could have ended the war, but when the Southerners retreated the North didn't follow them, which made the war go on. The North did win that battle since they had more men than the Confederates. -
President Abraham Lincoln's Speech
A while after the battle at Antietam, President Abraham Lincoln gave a short little speech that lots of people back then said was the worst speech ever given by a President. In his speech the declared the Emancipation Proclamation to them. He even said that this was something that everyone was going to forget, but many years after we still remember it. -

Appomattox, VA
This wasn't a battle, but it was a really important event that happened during the Civil War. It was the surrender that ended the Civil War between General Lee and General Grant. Before the surrender Grant ordered his men to be respectful to the other soldiers since they were going to become brethren again. When it ended the Union soldiers gave them food, clothes, and shoes to help their new country men get home. -
President Lincoln's Assassination
6 days after the Civil War had ended, President Lincoln was assassinated. He was short by John Wilkes Booth a well known actor at Ford's Theater in Washington. He lived for 9 hours after getting shot. This event was significant because not only did the president later die but also that the person that shot him was hoping that the war was still going. This not only caused the President to die but also lots of other people that helped in this plan.
