The Great Storm
Galveston, Texas being the 4th largest city, was destroyed by a hurricane with 100 mph winds, the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history, causing an estimated 6,000-8,000 deaths. The storm left approximately 10,000 people homeless and caused a lot of property damage, estimated at $20-30 million. -
Texas Oil Boom
Anthony F. Lucas drilled the first major well resulting in a massive geyser of oil, the known as "Lucas Gusher" the Lucas Gusher gushed oil 150 feet into the air at Spindletop Hill is located south of Beaumont in eastern Jefferson County, Texas. -
Texas Women's Rights
Texas legislature ratified the 19th amendment for Southern women to vote becoming the ninth state and the first Southern state to ratify the amendment. While white women had secured the vote and Black women still struggled to vote in Texas. -
East Field Oil discovered
Haroldson Lafayette known as " HL" discovers the largest oilfield in East Texas called the "East Field oil". One of the greatest petroleum discoveries in United States history, arrived during the Great Depression. -
Beaumont Racial Riot
A racial riot that lasted for two days, broke out because a White woman accused a Black man of raping her, causing an explosion event to take place in Beaumont, Texas. More than 200 people were arrested, 50 were injured, 2 Black and 1 White were killed during this riot. -
Brown v. Board of Education
Oliver Brown ends segregation in public schools. The unanimous decision overturned the "Separate but Equal" doctrine established by Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896, marking a moment in the Civil Rights Movement by declaring that segregated schools were unequal and violating the Fourteenth Amendment's Equal Protection Clause. This decision paved the way for desegregation of schools across the United States. -
John F. Kennedy Assassination
At 12:30pm, John F. Kennedy was struck twice, one in the upper back and one in the head from an open window on the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository by Lee Harvey Oswald. He was rushed to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:00pm that afternoon. -
Barbara Jordan
Barbara Jordan of Houston, Texas becomes the first Black Woman to be elected in the State Senate. Barbara was nominated to serve on federal commissions by President Lyndon B. Johnson after she was elected to the Senate. The commissions worked on housing and income maintenance. -
Astronuting Strong unto the moon
Apollo Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the moon, as the commander of NASA's Apollo 11, transmits the first words from the surface of the moon: " Houston, the Eagles has landed." -
George W. Bush
Texas Governor George W. Bush at age 54, elected as the 43rd President of the United States of America.
