Significance and History of the Argentine Tango & CITA
This hot ballroom dance began to develop in Buenos Aires in the 1800s. Mainly influenced by those of the dances in Spain and Cuba, along with other cultures too, at first it was not well recieved by all. At times the distance between partners are an arms length away, but mostly the distance between the partners is very close and intimate. In the 1900s however, when the dance started to spread across the world, the dance was accepted as one of the staples of the Argentine culture. -

Significance and history of Yoruba mask making
The Yoruba people, aside from playing a big role in Nigeria's AGRIBUSINESS (general term for the businesses that provide the vast array of goods and services that support the agriculture industry), are gifted in the art of mask making. Traditionally, these masks are worn by "mask bearers" at funerals, & they are believed to embody the spirit of the deceased person. The Yoruba believe this & also when the masks are worn by a traditional healer, they can draw out evil within a possesed person. -

The Yoruba is divided into 20 SUBCULTURES (A cultural group within a larger culture). You will go to the Ibeji subculture located in southwest Nigeria, & create a traditional possesion mask. The wearing of specific mask types is one CULUTURAL TRAIT (A single element of normal practice in a culture) that distinguishes the African tribes. Then, once you have created the mask, you will go with the local Yorubian healer witness a traditional African exorcism during the sunrise. -

Penujak Pottery
The Penujak Village is the oldest pottery centre in Lombok Island. About 70% of the people in this area are pottery craftsmen. All of the pottery is made by hand, there most famous creation being their "kettle". The quality of their craft is among the best in all of this FRAGMENTED STATE (a state that is not a contigous whole, but rather seperated parts); Indonesia. -
Pottery Project
You must create a vase, alongside the Penujak Lombok people, going through the traditional pottery making process without machines or modern tools. Start with mixing soil, clay, feldspar, sand & water to create a "dough like" substance, then shape the dough into the vase shape, allow it to dry, color it and add texture by pressing and stroking with either small coils or balls, and finish by firing it. The cost is USD$30. -
