Ponyboy is walking home alone in the night. A couple of socs try to jump him, but he screams for his brother, Sodapop, and their gang comes to rescue Ponyboy.

The Outsiders, Pages 19-46
Ponyboy, Johnny, and Two-Bit go to the movies. While they're there the meet to female Socs, Cherry and Marcia. Ponyboy and Cherry really got along and so did Marcia and Two-Bit. They overed to give them a ride home, and when they were walking to the car Cherry and Marcia's boys drove up all drunk. Cherry and Marcia left with them to avoid any trouble.

Ponyboy and Johnny were hanging out at the lot and fell asleep. Ponyboy returned home late and got in huge fight with Darry, which resulted in Darry hitting Ponyboy and Pony running away. Ponyboy goes back to the lot to find Johnny and they both run away to a park. At the park, the Socs that picked up Marcia and Cherry pull up. One of the Socs holds Ponyboy's head under water to try and drownd him, but Johnny ends up stabbing another one of them to death!

The Outsiders, Pages 62-75
Ponyboy and Johnny catch a train and go to the church Dally told them to go to. They're both really homesick. Since they look like greasers and they want to stay ingognito, they decide to change their looks. Johnny cuts off all of Ponyboy's hair and bleaches it. Ponyboy cuts off all of Johnny's hair. It's a very emotional experience for both of them, but they are going through a hard time.

The Outsiders, Pages 75-93
Dally comes to see Johnny and Ponyboy at the church. He takes them Dairy Queen and Johnny decides he wants to turn himself in. As they're all heading back home, they see the church is on fire. There are some kids trapped in the burning church and Johnny and Ponyboy go in to try and save them. They manage to get all the kids safely out. Ponyboy manages to escape but the roof caves in before Johnny can get out.

The Outsiders, Pages 93-104
Ponyboy, Dally, and Johnny are taken to the hospital. Ponyboy and Dally are going to be okay, but the doctor says that IF Johnny makes it, he'll be crippled for the rest of his life. Sodapop and Darry reunite with Ponyboy at the hospital. Ponyboy finally understands that Darry really does love him and care about him. They're all interviewed by policemen and reporters and then Ponyboy finally gets to come home.

Two-Bit and Steve come to see Ponyboy and they bring the newspaper. Ponyboy, Dally, Darry, Johnny, and Sodapop are all on the front page. Johnny and Ponyboy are displayed as delequants turned to heros. It also mentions how Darry, Sodapop, and Ponyboy have all worked so hard to make a good life withouth their parents that they shouldn't be sent to a boys home. This was the first Ponyboy has heard about that possibilty and he really doesn't want that.

The Outsiders, Pages 114-118
Ponyboy and Two-Bit go to the Tasty Freeze where the Socs in the blue mustange that jumped Johnny and Ponyboy drove up. Randy, the owner of the mustange, asked to talk to Ponyboy. They both went into the mustang. Randy told Ponyboy how brave he was for saving those kids, and that he wasn't going to participate the rumble between the Socs and the Greasers. Ponyboy realizes that Randy isn't a Soc, he's just a human, and that Cherry was right. It's rough everywhere.

The Outsiders, Pages 119-149
Two-Bit and Ponyboy visit Johnny and Dally in the hospital before the rumblr between the Greasers and the Socs. Johnny isn't really doing very well. At the rumble, the Greasers win! Everyone in the gang gets pretty beat up, but right after they win Dally hauls Ponyboy over to the hospital to tell Johnny the good news. After they tell him about the fight, Johnny says his last words and passes away. Dally finally broke and ran out, leaving Ponyboy.

Dally robs a grocery store after Johnny dies and is chased down by the police. He pulls an unloaded gun on the police and they shoot him dead. Ponyboy knows that Dally wanted to die. Ponyboy passes out because of a concussion he got during the rumblr. He's completely out and delirious for a few days. When he wakes up he has to stay in his bed. He's having trouble handling the deaths. He doesn't believe Johnny is dead.

Ponyboy has his court date for the night Johnny killed Bob, the Soc. Ponyboy is still really delusional and has convinced himself that Johnny is not dead and that he, himself, was the one who killed Bob. When he's called to the stand, the judge only asks him questions about living with his brothers. After court, everything was fine, but everything was different.

The Outsiders, Pages 169-180
Ponyboy's grades start dropping. He's basically failing all his classes and thinks he can just drop out and get a job like Sodapop. Darry and Ponyboy get into a huge fight about this that causes Sodapop to leave and run. Darry and Ponyboy chase him down, and once they get him they all have a nice talk. Sodapop makes them realize their faults. Ponyboy decides he'll try in school. He starts by writing a theme essay for English class.
