During his reign, Jayavarman II used certain techniques to expand the area under his control. This included wars, alliances and marriges. Jayavarman II also built several Hindu temples. Jayavarman II successors then went on tpo expand the empire the same way he did; by building temples.

During his reign, Yasovarman constructed a new capital called 'Yasodharapura' and a gigantic resivor in the Angkor area.

Under Jayavarman V's power, the Khmer court became a centre for scholars and artists, therefore meaning that more educated peope were brought into the Khmer area.

After the decades following Jayavarman V's death, there was alot of power struggle in the Khmer Empire.

The greatest of all the Khmer Temples 'Angkor Wat' was built in just 37 years by 50,000 workers under the reign of Suryavarman II. The temple was dedicated to the Hindu god Vinshu.

Suryavarman II extended the Khmer Empire by conquering Haripunchi and South West Thailand. He also took several proviences of Champa and extended them North.

After Suryavaman's II death, the Cham invaded the Khmer Empire. They rowed up the Mekong River and across Tonle sap. Once they arrived, they sacked the Khmer capital - as well as killing King Tribhuvanadityavarman. This was one of the major contributing factors to the decline of the Khmer Empire.

Jayavarman VII was regarded the greatest of all Khmer rulers. During his reign, Jayavarman VII built and did many things. Many temples were built as well as the 'great city' of Angkor Thom (including the Bayon temple.) For twenty-two years of his reign, Khmer was in war against Champa, as well as gaining alot of its land. Jayavarman VII did a lot to help build the empire, by building many roads, hospitals and rest-houses (which were accommodated by traders and travellers.)

Before Jayavarman VII reigned, Buddishm and Hinduism had been practised for a long time. As Jayavarman VII was a follower of one of the different types of Buddhism, Mahayana Buddhism, this became the new religion of his state.

After Jayavarman VII's death, the empire was greatly effected. No more temples were built, as well as loosing much of the land they had conquered. Things did not get better when the first Thai kingdom was established in 1238, due to several Thai nobles rebelling.

Jayavarman VIII wanted a return to Hinduism, so he converted many Buddhist temples to Hindu temples, as well as destroying THOUSANDS of Buddha temples - which caused mayhem along the two religions. The empire was also threatened by a much more powerful empire during his reign.

Jayavarman VIII was overthrown by his son-in-law Srindravarman.

The Khmer Empire was introduced Therava Buddism by Srindravarman - it became a more common known religion in the Khmer quickly.

Indrajayavarman is said to be the last 'successor' before the end of the 'Khmer Classical Period.' After this date, there were no longer any more records indicating new kings and no more new temples - this could've possibly been because the 'new' religion Theravada Buddhism didn't require more/new buildings.

The Thai's sacked Angkor (in 1431) and it was abonded by the Khmer rulers in the years following.
