A Teacher Is Born
I was born in a small town called Whitecourt, which is about 3 and a half hours away from Red Deer. I am the oldest child and I have one younger sister. -
My First Day In The Hallway!
I started school when I was 3 years old! I attended "Play School" when I was 3 & 4 years old and then transferred to St. Mary's School for my Kindergarten to grade 3 years. -
A New School, A New Adventure!
After Grade 3 I transferred to St.Joseph School which was where I attended grade 4 to grade 12. The school was small and only had about 550 kids in total. I graduated in 2014 with a class size of 27 students. -
Tutoring ... My First Taste of Teaching.
When I was in Grade 10 I decided to do tutoring as an option class. I tutored in a grade 4 classroom where my duties were to take children and read with them, help them catch up on different work, and assist them in computer class. -
Moving to Red Deer
When I graduated in 2014 I decided I wanted to go to a school that offered a smaller campus size (since I was used to having small class sizes in high school). I also wanted to go to a school where no one knew me. To me, College was a fresh start where I could discover who I was without having predetermined labels placed on me from people that had known me since Kindergarden. -
Oh Hello, Holy Family School!
In my second year of school, since I was now more comfortable in Red Deer, I decided that I wanted to become more involved in the community. I decided to email a bunch of schools in Red Deer to see if anyone was looking for a student volunteer. Holy Family accepted me into one of their grade 1 classrooms. I spend one afternoon a week helping the kids with all of their daily activities. It was fun and rewarding and I made some really great connections. -
Teaching Gym, Who Would Have Thought?
Through a phys ed course I took in my second year (KPED) I was able to do some teaching in a grade 5 classroom. This class was also at Holy Family School. I loved the experience I had with the kids. Since I am a person that didn't like gym when I was a student it was rewarding for myself to create lesson plans that were non--threatening and engaging to all students, even the non-competitive ones. -
E.C.H.O.S
The summer after my second year of school I worked as a support staff working for persons with disabilities. The service is called E.C.H.O.S which stands for Empowering Citizens for Health and Opportunity Society. I worked with two adult individuals and spent my summer days helping them live the most independent lives possible. I helped them budget, pay bills, cook, run errands, stay active and healthy, take them to and from doctors appointments (in whitecourt and in Edmonton). I LOVED that job! -
Living In The Library!
In my second year I worked very hard and was placed on the Presidents Honour Roll for my GPA for both my Fall and Winter Semester. -
Accepted Into The Middle Years Program!
YAY! In my second year of post secondary I was accepted into the middle years program! I was so happy and proud of myself. -
Teaching At Eastview Middle School
Through my math curriculum class I was able to teach a fun math lesson to grade 8 students at Eastview Middle School! -
My Third Year Practicum!
For my third year practicum I was placed at St.Thomas Aquinas Middle School in Red Deer. I taught grade 8 English and Physical Education, grade 6 Physical Education and supported my practicum teacher in grade 7 Religion. I also helped with the Drama Club during lunch time. I learnt so much from this practicum in terms of planning, engaging students and DI. I had so much to reflect on when I returned to school! -
Volunteer: Feedback For "Day In The Life" Presentations
In your third year of the middle years program you must create a lesson and then present it to your classmates, a fourth year student sits in as you present and then gives feedback. In my fourth year I volunteered to sit in and give feedback! So much fun watching people become teachers! I would definitely love to teach teachers someday! -
Fourth Year Extended Practicum!
In my fourth year practicum I was placed at Holy Family School in Red Deer. I taught L.A., Math, LLI, as well as Religion. In my fourth year I chose to take part in extended practicum. This meant that I was in the classroom I would be doing my AFX practicum in from the very first day of school! It was great to make connections early as well as get a good feel of the school before I would start teaching in February! -
Newcomer Reading Club!
I volunteered through Red Deer Public Library and C.A.R.E (Central Alberta Refugee Effort) in their "Newcomer Reading Club". In the club I would meet with refugees and immigrants in Red Deer and surrounding areas and I would teach them how to read in english. We would meet once a week, each day focusing on comprehension, punctuation and pronunciation. It was very rewarding to see their skills grow over the 8 weeks we were together.
