    Franz Ferdinand, heir to the austrian thrown, traveled to the newly anexed states of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Due to the poorness of Bosnia its didnt matter the Franz's wife rode with him on their way through town.     Austria-hungary declares war on Serbia after Achduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife were assasinatted by a group of Serbian nationalists in Sarajevo. This is also due to the fact that Austria hoped to demoralize any more nationalist movemen which were brewing in Austria's balkan states.This is considered the beginning of the first World War.

    Russia Mobilizes & Germany Declares War
    In hopes of gaining power and land in the Balkans, Russia sends troops to help aid Serbia's revolt against the Austrians. Although this is not an actual attack on Austria-Hungary, this is seen as a proclamation of war against Austria. Germany's previouse alliance with Austria forced Germany into the war, and in order to maintain the upper hand and not have war on two fronts, Germany declares war on Russia, and then France.

A series of follow-up battles destroyed the majority of the First Army as well, and kept the Russians off-balance until the spring of 1915.

    U.S. Entry into World War IZimmerman Telegram ImageGermany wanted to resume the use of U-boat warfare so that the war would end with German victory by the fall of 1917. The warfare started up again on February 1, 1917, with support from Wilhelm. In January 1917, Britain intercepted the Zimmermann telegram, which was written to Mexico, that promised U.S. land to Mexico if they supported Germany in the war. Britain presented this message to Woodrow Wilson on February 24, 1917. The U.S declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917.

Meanwhile, Germany began to grow stronger and braver, using their submarines to sink neutral ships. After German submarines ambushed and sank the Lusitania, killing 1,200 men,President Wilson gave Germany a final warning. It is thought to be carried by water foul, and the symptons of the Spanish Flu were so severe that it killed massive amounts of healthy adults. Many of those deaths can be attributed to the close quarters and conditions of the soldiers at that time, which produced a higher infection rate. The Outbreak killed approximately 20- 40 million people.

The constitution abolished the several constitutional monarchies that had previously formed the German Empire. The Weimar government was unpopular because of its acceptance of the Treaty of Versailles; the large penalties Germany had to pay caused economic chaos in the country.
