Nationalism
Because of succesful negotiations with other countries the U.S. started having felings of pride and loyalty, called nationalism. This was also largely supported by Henry Clay from Kentucky. -
Era of Good Feelings
Following the good-willed visit to Boston made by James Monroe, a newspaper descirbed this 1815-1825 era, as the era of good feeling. This was marked with a lower level of concern. -
McCulloch v. Maryland
Maryland tried to pass a tax on bank operations but, James McCulloch, refused to pay this tax and Maryland went to court. The court decided that the national bank was constitutional. -
Adams-Onis Treaty
The U.S. had disputes with Spanish Florida. Due to this Sapinand the U.S. negotiated a treaty in which Spain gave the U.S. Florida and the U.S. gave Spain what is now Texas. -
Missouri Comprimise
Missouri applied for statehodd as a slave state. but there were 11 slave states and 11 free states, so it was denied. But Henry Clay convinced congress to agree to the Missouri Comprimise. This entered Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state and made any state north of a certain point free state and anything under slave states. -
Santa Fe Trail
This was another important trail to the west. it led from Independence, Missouri, to Santa Fe, New Mexico. -
Sectionalism
These were disagreements between the regions of the U.S. called sectionalism and even during the era of good feelings threatened the Union. -
Monroe Doctrine
When Mexico gained independence from Spain the president got worried due to European intrrest in Latin America Countries. So a document was put together that warned European countries not to interfere with the Americas. -
Bearau of Indian Affairs
To manage the moving of Indians to western lands congress formed the Bearau of Indian Affairs, a still-functioning government agency. -
Tariff of Abominations
As many northern and western agricultural products had competition with foreign imports, the tariff of abominations was made to protect them. But this tariff had negative effects on the Southern economy. -
States Rights Doctrine
In response to the tariff of abominations the Vice President, Chalhoune wrote South Carolina Exposition and Protest in which he advanced the states' rights doctrine. This said that state power should be greater than federal power as the states made up the national government. The opposition to this eventually forced Calhoune to resign as vice president. -
Jacksonian Democracy
The jacksonian Democracy followed the era of Jeffersonian Democracy. The Jacksonian Democracy is a political movement that pushed for greater democracy for the common man. -
Spoils System
In defending one of Andrew Jacksons appointments, Senator William Marcy said, "To the victor belong the spoils of the enemy". It is a practice in which the party winning an election rewards supporters with active government posts. -
Indian Removal Act
President Jackson wanted to make more land for Americans to settle where indians are settled now. Pressured by Jackson congress passed the Indian Removal Act which authorized the removal of Native Americans who moved East of the Missippi. -
Nullification Crisis
South Carolina decided to test the states' rights doctrine. They voted for their own army, and decided that the 1828 and 1832 tariffs were void. This made Jackson use force on South Carolina and ended in 1883 with the compromise tariff. -
Whig Party
A new political party formed to oppose Jackson. This party supported the idea of a weak president and a strong congress. -
Indian Territory
After congress passed the indian removal act they established indian territory a place for where to move the native americans. -
Trail of Tears
In 1838 the U.S. troops began to move the Cherokee Indians to the Indian Territory. This 800-mile journey was called the Trail of Tears. -
Alamo
The Alamo was an abandoned mission near San Antonio that became and important battle site in the Texas Revolution. -
Oregon Trail
Many American settlers from places such as Missouri, and Iowa moved west into Oregon Country hoping to settle there. -
Donner Party
The Donner party was a group of American pioneers led by George Donner who set to find a shorter rounte to California. -
California Gold Rush
The California Gold Rush is a period in American history when gold was found in Sutters Mill, California. Thia brought around 300,000 gold seekers to Califronia. -
Forty-Niners
The Forty-Niners were participants in the California Gold Rush. They would travel to California in hope of getting gold to get rich. -
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
This was the treaty signed between Mexico and America that made settlement between the America and Mexico Border. -
Gadsden Purchase
The Gasden Purchase is a region of present-day southern Arizona and south New Mexico purchased by the united States by James Gadsden from Mexico.
