During the Era of Good Feelings, different parts of the country had disagreements which is known as sectionalism. One of these was when Missouri tried to enter as a slave state.

The United States wanted Florida, so Jackson went down there to negotiate with Spanish leaders. This began the first act of the seminole war. In 1819 the treaty was signed nto settle all land disputed between the two. The treaty said that we controlled Florida and they controlled Texas.

James McCulloch refused to pay his taxes and Maryland took him to court for it. The case went all the way to the supreme court. They ruled that the taxing was constitutional and he had to pay his taxes.

This settled the dispute of Missouri entering as a slave state. It said that Missouri would enter the United Staes as a slave state and Maine would join as a slave free state. This also said that slavery would be prohibited north of Missouri's southern border.

Britain wasnted to make a joint statement to warn the rest of Europe not to interfere with Latin-America. America did not want Britain to do this so America made their own policy warnihng European powers to not mess with America.

To make sure that the Indians moved to Oklahoma, congress made the Bureau of Indian Affairs to oversee the move. The government also provided protection to avoid conflict between the Indians and settlers.

When Jackson won the election he rewarded his supporters with government jobs. Giving jobs to political backers is known as the spoils system.

Before Jackson took office, congress put a high tax on imports. This made southerners angry and ended Jackson's reelection.

John C. Calhoun helped make the States Rights Doctrine. He had supporters and opponents. The dispute between the two is known as the Nullification Crisis.

This said that the states had more power than the federal government. They had the power to nullify or reject any law they find to be unconstitutional. This was because they formed the government.

During the 1820's & 1830's democracy was becoming more popular. States were changing their voting rights and it was expanding democracy.

To compensate for forcing all the Indians to leave their homes, the government set aside land for Indiana known as reservations. This land was where present day Oklahoma is.

President Jackson and other political members wanted to open settlements from the east Mississippi River into the west. Congress was pressured and signed the act, forcing them to move.

This was a new political party that named themselves after an English party that opposed monarchy. They wanted a strong congress and a weak president.

In the 1830's troops began to move the Cheerokee Indians into Indian Territory. This was a 800 mile march and almost 4,500 Indians died along the way from hunger, disease, and weather conditions.

Many settlers began moving to Oregan Country. This was a 2,000 mile long trail. This stretched from Independence, Missouri, or Iowa into Oregan Country. Once they got there they set up settlements and towns.

Some believed that America was meant to settle land all the way to the Pacific Ocean to spread democracy. This lead to the slavery issue, if a state joined, would it be slave free or not.

These were the people who first discovered gold. They got stranded in Californis and when then they discovered it they kept it secret. Then an Indian saw it and spread the word.

This was the treaty that ended the war between America and Mexico. This forced Mexico to turn over most of their northern land. This included Utah, California, and Nevada.

Calofornia was at first a rest stop for people on the Oregon Trail. Then a group of travelers found gold and the word spread. Then everyone moved to California to try and get rich. They then formed towns and settlements.

These were the people who rushed to California to try and find gold.

After the war, America paid Mexico $10 million to buy the land of present day Arizona and New Mexico. Now there was a complete boundary between America and Mexico made up of buy states.

This trail was similar to the Oregan Trail. It came from the same places but went to New Mexico. When they got there they also started towns and settlements.
