Dictatorship of Primo de Rivera
Taking advantage of this unhappiness, in 1923, General Primo de Rivera gave a coup d'etat and took control of the country. He acted as a dictator, abolished the Constitution and prohibited political parties. He resigned in 1930. -

The Second Republic was proclaimed in April, introducing a new constitution with more rights, including freedom of speech and voting for both genders, while aiming to improve education and limit the power of the king and Church. -

In 1936, General Francisco Franco led a coup against the Republic, starting the Spanish Civil War. The population was divided into two sides: the Republicans, who supported the government, and the Nationalists, led by Franco. After over two years of fighting, Franco's forces captured most of Spain, and in 1939, they won the war.
