Jacques Cartier-1530s-1540s
In the 1530s to the 1540s, Jacques Cartier's three voyages to The Gulf Of St. Lawerence created some early fur trading with the First Nations and the Europeans. -

This was mainly due to the fact that in Europe,beavers were dying out but they were found in North America miraculously.Europeans used much fur for clothing which was why they hunted beavers.
It was hard for First nations and Europeans to speak to eachother, so they used simple hand signs..

The Fur Trade
From the early 1670s to the 1870s, people from many parts of the world gathered in North America for the fur trade. This was a big part of Canada's population. -
English Trade
In the 17th century, the English started their Fur Trading posts on Hudson Bay. -
Failing Companies
In the 18th Century, many companies in Fur Trade failed due to the changing of fashions in Europe. -
British Columbian Government
In 1858, the British Columbian government was created due to the many miners in the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush,when gold was found in Thompson River,BC. The government created mining permits, so that people wouldn't fight over who got to have gold that was found. -
Barkerville
In 1861, gold was found in a creek which the prospectors that found the gold called Williams Creek. Billy Barker, who had 2 unsuccsesful mining attempts, came to Williams creek, and struck gold 40 feet under in a spot where people said there would be no gold. The town of Barkerville sprang to life,named after Billy Barker.
$26,000,000 worth of gold was the total amount found when the rush ended. -

The gold rush -Start & End
Gold was struck in BC in 1859, and more strikes followed in 1860, but the actual gold rush started 1861, as it was not widely public until that time. Gold had started dissapearing after a while, so people had to use more money to dig deeper for dynamite,which wasn't very good for the enviroment.Many people settled down in Canada after the gold rush was over though.Miners shared the river with the aboriginals, who at first didnt like them. -
Cariboo Road
In 1862, The Cariboo Wagon Road was made, and it was used for miners to get to the gold fields, the problem was, it was very easy for wagons to fall off, which meant certain death. The road followed to Hell's Gate and Jackass Mountain. -
Dynamite
When the major Cariboo Gold Rush ended in 1866, wealthier mining companies were still in buisness, though they had to use dynamite to get to the gold deeper in the ground, because miners got the majority of the surface gold. -
London, 1866
The leaders of the provinces Canada, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick met in London in 1866, to discuss about making a country. They agreed to call the country Canada and that the 2 old places of Canada would be Ontario & Quebec. It was demanded that the Nova Scotians would have a vote about these things. Confederation went through all houses of the British Parliment, and Canada was then created. -

In 1867, the leaders of Canada created an act of all the laws that made Canada Canada. It was called the British North America Act, -

Fur Trade End(2)
The fur trade also brought many people to Canada, had a major effect on roles in films and our popular culture, and resulted in the founding of HBC, the Hudson Bay Company. -
Fur Trade End
Around the 1870s, the big part of the fur trade had died down. People still trade today, but it is now a very minor part of our lives.
Before the fur trade started, there was an estimated 100,000 beavers in the Canadian forests, and when it ended, the beavers were almost extinct. Not just the beaver, but many animals in our forests come in much less numbers due to the fur trade.
The fur trade was not a bad thing,though. The fur trade brought many people to Canada,

The CP Rail (3)
The Railroad was also a major part of why Canada is multicultural. It brought much people, which is why we have a big population nowadays.
The enviroment was hurt though, because of the many cut trees, and all the mountains with caves going through them.
The Canadian Pacific Railway goes for 22,500 kilometers(14,000 miles). -

The CP Rail
Sir John A.Macdonald, the first P.M. of Canada, promised he would create a rail way that went across Canada, the Canadian Pacific Railway(CP Rail), in 1871. It was delayed, and actually began in 1873,when Mackenzie was the P.M.
The railroad was being built slowly, until John A. Macdonald was once again the P.M. in 1878, and that's when work sped up.In October 21,1880, the Canadian Pacific Railway company was actually founded, and work was very good in 1881 to 1885, when the railway was done. -

The CP Rail (2)
While building, problems like trees and wildlife were in the way of workers. Two big problems were having to find a route through Selkirk Mountains which was Albert Bowman Rogers' job. The other major problem was that the Blackfoot First Nations owned some of the land that the planned railway route crossed.
The CP Rail was a big part of our history. Many shops, houses and towns popped up near the railway, because it was easy to get to those places via the railroad. -

Prince Edward Island was created on July 1, 1873. -
Yukon Territories
The Yukon Territories was created on June 13, 1898 -
Saskatchewan
Saskatchewan was created on September 1, 1905. -
Alberta
Alberta was created on September 1, 1905 -

Newfoundland & Labrador was created on March 31, 1949. -
The Constitution Act of 1982
In 1982, the leaders of Canada passes a constitution act, to change the original British North America Act of 1867.
It was important for them to do this, because we should have good rules to live by, which can be improved every few years, due to whats happening and why it is happening. This document was called the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom. We need it so that we can have current and well thought rules to live by. -
Nunavut (Territory)
Before Nunavut, the Northwest Territories covered where it is now. People thought that the Northwest Territories was too big, so on April 1, 1999, part of the Northwest Territories was cut, then turned into Nunavut.
