Responsible Government taking over
By the 1860's all the British colonies have responsible government. -
Conferences take place in Canada
The united Canadas were in trouble, so they turned towards the maritime provinces. In the Charletttown conference, Both canadas met with, P.E.I, N.S, N.B and Newfoundland to create a merger. After the Quebec Conference and the London Conference, they came up with a final decision and details. Both Canadas, N.B and N.S have merged together. -
British North American Act is created
The results of the 3 conferences led to the Dominion of Canada. Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the two Canadas formed a federation. This constitution brought in a federal and provincial government, immigration and agricuture were shared in control by both governments. -
The Northwest Rebellions stand up
These rebellions of Metis lead by Louis Riel fought against the government in order to not be part of canadian laws. Louis Riel ended up hung for his crimes. -
MacDonalds national policy
John MacDonald, an english politician who formed a National Policy to promote national unity.
His policies included:
- Build a railway: Canadian Pacific
- Increase custom duties
- Encourage immigration; mainly Western Canada -
Wheat to dairy in Quebec
Dairy becomes Quebecs main agricultural product. Replacing wheat. -
Alberta and Saskatchewan join Canada
Canadas movement towards the west is flowing. Alberta and Sasketchewan become provinces. -
World War I begins in Europe
From 1914-1918, World War I was a gruesome war. The main strategy in this war was trench warfare. The issue was that soldiers had modern weaponry but with outdated tactics. Canada was forced to help Britian in this war considering we were one of their colonies. -
Conscription is reinforced
During World War 1, soldiers would volunter to fight but there werent enough soldiers. A conscription was reinforced which forced people of Canada to fight for their mother country. -
Women receive the right to vote
All of the men were in war and there was no one to vote in the federal elections. The government made the decision to allow women to vote. -
The great deppresion begins
Following the stock market crash, the great deppresion had begun in North America. Banks no longer had cash and people weren't spending money. The stocks plummeted below zero in an event called Black Thursday. The government takes the following actions to restore its economy.
- Public work projects were encouraged
-Farming was encouraged
- There were work camps
- The government gave direct aid to people -
Statute of Westminister gives Canada freedom
Canada is now regarded as their own nation by the world. Britain signs the Staute of Westminister which makes Canada independent in every aspct except for changing the constitution. -
World War II begins over seas
In the second World War Canada went on it's own accord. We went as allies. In this war there was a much increased womens participation. Yet again some citizens were forced to join the army but luckily, they didn't see any action. -
Duplessis era begins in Quebec
Maurice Duplessis was the Premier of Quebec from 1944- 1959. He followed more traditional values and didn't appreciate the ideas of urbanization. Duplessis put the church back into power and led a back to the land campaign. Duplessis nationalized electricity in Quebec for farmers. -
Americanization of Canadian life
At the end of WW2, Canadians were adopting american culture like TV, radio and new consumer goods. -
The Baby-Boom hits
After the war men came home and were very glad to be reunited with their families. This triggered a major increase in births and we call this phenomenon the " baby-boom".
There was also a natural increase in immigration. -
Quebec gets its own flag
Duplessis gave Quebec its own identity through a flag with the fleur de lyse on it. -
Asbestos strike occurs
The Asbestos strike pitted workers against the government and is often seen as a turning point in organizing opposition to Duplessis. -
New regions in Quebec are opening up
During the 50's, due to mining of iron ore, new regions are opening up. -
Almost all farms have electricity
90% of Quebecois farmers have electricity at their disposal which encouraged farming. -
Quiet Revolution is transforming Quebec
From the early to late 60's, life in Quebec was modernizing. This period is known as the Quiet Revbolution. There was a rapid far reaching process of social, economic and politcal reform in Quebec. -
The famous pill is invented
A birth control pill was invented and while it was illegal, this led to a decrease in the populations birth rate. -
Office de la langue francais was created
This was one of many Quebec nationalism steps taken to promote the french language. -
Government is taking control of education
The creation of the MEQ led to the government controlling education within the province. -
Hydro--Quebec is a main resource in Quebec
Hydro-Quebec, became govenment owned during the quiet revolution. This company produces electricity using hydro- electric dams in northern Quebec. -
Parti Quebecois is formed
Upon quitting the liberal part, Rene Levesque teamed up with the RIN and the RN to create the Parti Quebcois (PQ). A seperatist politcal group. -
The October Crisis frightens Quebec
A terrorist group known as the FLQ kidnapped James Cross and Pierre Laporte. The prime minister; Trudeau responded with a war measures act which put soldiers and tanks on the streets of Montreal to fight back against this group. Laportes body was found dead in a trunk of a car and Cross was released. This event was known as the "October Crisis". -
BIll 101 is assesed
Bill 101 was a law created by the government which only allowed french signs in public spaces. -
Trudeau no longer wants Britain's permission
The statue of Westminister gave Cnaada all it's rights except for the power to amend the constitution. At the time, prime minister of Canada; Pierre Elliott trudeau wanted to give Canada that power. So that Canada would be able to amend it's constitution even without britain's permission. -
Referendum is held to decide futue of QC
A referendum was held by PQ leader Rene Levesque in order to try and seperate from Canada. 60% of people voted against this referendum. -
The Constitution Act is signed
This constitution gave Canada the power to amend their future constitutions without Britain's permission and also added a charter of values to protect individuals. -
Meech Lake Accord takes place
In an attempt to gain more independance for QC, this accord was denied by two provinces. Newfoundalnd and Manitoba. -
Oka Crisis affects Natives
This crisis lasted 78 days and put the natives versus the government. Mohawk warriors and soldiers were disputing over land which was proposed to be used for a golf course. -
Chalettetown Agreement is held
Once again in an attempt to gain more independance for QC, once agin it was voted against by the people. -
Another referendum occurs in Quebec
This referendum was led by jacques Parizeau. The goal was to seperate from Canada once agin. The votes were 49.4% for but 50.6% against. therefore QC remains part of Canada. -
Nunavut joins Canada
Nunavut is the final province to join Canada.
