Israel declared independence. Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Iraq all attacked Israel; however, Israel gained land. Egypt gained the Gaza Strip and Jordan gained the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Settlement Construction Begins
The Israeli government approved the building of settlements in Sinai, the Gaza Strip, and the West Bank. This made traveling for Palestinians in the West Bank harder. Attrition Battles
Israel attacked Egypt, Jordan and Syria. Isreal gained land from all of those countries. Isreal promised that Jerusalem would remain a city unified through all religions, with each one having access to their holy sites. Isreal said it would return other territories for peace and recogntion of its existance. Fighting lasted until Jordan succeeded in evicting the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization) from the country.

The October War/ Yom Kippur War
Egypt and Syria atted Israel on the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur. As a result, Israel ended up retaining the territories they captured in 1967, but did not keep any additional land after that. Egypt and Israel sign a Peace Agreement
Egypt became the first Arab country to officially recognise Israel as its own state, and enter a peace treaty with them. As a result, Israel teturned the Sinai that were captured in 1967, removed Jewish families from the homes they established there. This treaty became a model for Israel's "Land for Peace" policy. The 1982 Lebanon War
PLO units in southern Lebanon increasingly attacked communities in northern Israel. Isreal retalliated with attacks using bombs. Israel withdrew from most of Lebanon in 1985; however, Israel maintained a military presence in a section of southern Lebanon that served as a bufffer zone. The First Intifada

The Oslo Accords
The Oslo Accords were a set of agreements that began in 1993 when Israel and the PLO signed a Declaration of Principles. This led to the creation of the Palestinian Authority.
