(Chapter2) In the early years of Janie's life, she lived with her grandmother (Nanny) in the backyard of the Washburns. A white couple whose kids often play with Janie. Janie would live on the Washburn property until Nanny gathered enough money to buy their own house and land. -
Janie's marriage to Logan Killicks
(Chapter 2) After being caught kissing Johnny Taylor (local boy), At age 16, Janie is forced by Nanny to marry a wealthy middle-aged farmer by the name of Logan Killicks. -
Nanny's Death
(Chapter 4) Three months after Janie's marriage to Logan Killicks, Nanny, Janie's only known family member passes away knowing that she left Janie with a route for succsess like she dreamed. -
Janie meets Joe Starks
(Chapter 4) After living with Logan Killicks for over a year, Janie still doesn't have the feeling she would like during a marriage. When Logan went out for an errand one day, Janie crosses paths with a younger man named Jody Starks. Where the two immediately "hit it off". After more arguing with Logan, Janie decides to move on and travel with Jody to a new town. -
Janie arrives in Eatonville with Jody
(Chapter 5) After leaving Logan, Janie travels with Jody to Eatonville, Florida where they soon make a name for themselves by purchasing a surplus of land. With money comes power and Jody soon becomes mayor of Eatonville -

Temper Builds between Janie and Jody
(Chapter 7) After 19 long years with Jody in Eatonville, Janie and Jody start to become old mentally and physically. Thus leading to many arguments between the couple that usually end up becoming physical abuse. -
Jody Stark's Death
(Chapter 8) After more arguing between the middle aged couple, Jody passes away due to kidney failure. Janie has mixed feelings on the event but learns to move on. -
Janie Meets Tea Cake
(Chapter 10) Six months after the death of Mayor Starks, Janie meets Tea Cake, a much younger, less weathly man. They play checkers and chat all night until he leaves for home. -
From Eatonville to Jacksonville
(Chapter 13) With all the gossip about Janie and Tea Cake, Janie decides to travel with Tea Cake north to Jacksonville, Florida and have a major relationship. Soon after she travels to south Florida to live in the Everglades. -
Hurricane hits the Everglades
(Chapter 18) After 2 years living in the everglades with Tea Cake, the couple cross paths with a group of Native Americans who warn them about a powerful storm coming, Not caring for the warning, Tea Cake and Janie were one of few to stay. The storm hit their location hard destroying almost everything in town. -
The Death of Tea Cake
(Chapter 19) After returning to the Everglades Janie and Tea Cake start to rebuild their destroyed town. Soon after their arrival Tea Cake starts to become ill. After visiting the doctor, they found out that he was rabid from a dog bite he recevied during the hurricane. Feeling intimidated Janie had to shoot and kill Tea Cake before he ended up shooting her.
