Secularization of Texas missions began. Ranches began to increase because of this. Captain Juan Jose Hinojosa and his friends and families started establishing more ranches near the Rio Grande and Nueces County.(95) -
Louisiana
Napoleon Bonaparte makes Spain surrender Louisiana in help to resurrect a French Empire in North America. This obviously does not work in his favor and ends up selling Louisiana to the United States a couple years later. The United States claiming everything east of the Rio Grande then starts trouble with Spain.(102) -
Philip Nolan
Philip Nolan was killed during his fourth trip to Texas. Nolan took advantage of the Spanish Crown and traded with Texas Indians. His license was not valid and was suspected as a spy. He chose to stay in Texas and live with many tribes there. It was by his fourth trip to Texas of him trading with no license that the Spaniards caught on to him and was killed by a cannonball. His men quickly surrendered claiming they were there to capture mustangs.(105) -
Neutral Ground
Spanish authorities were advancing in the United States and occupying new posts and making new settlements. Jefferson ordered troops to chase the Spanish out. Commander General Nemecio Salcedo Proposed establishing a neutral ground between Natchitoches and the Sabine River. The boundary between the United States and Spanish territory was negotiated.(106.107) -
Hidalgo
Father Hidalgo launches revolt against Spanish rule. Hidalgo gave an impassioned call to arms to the people of Mexico that triggered the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence. News of this revolt traveled quicky and didn't receive much support at first. Texas then later eventually joins the revolt. (117) -
Medina
Texas Independence was proclaimed. Miguel Menchaca leads a division of Mexican American soldiers in battle. Arredondo defeats Republican Army of the North. The daylong battle was a disaster for Toledo's army.(122)
