Lincoln signs the emancipation proclimation, an executive order using the presidents powers of war, which freed the slaves of all of the suceded states at war with the Union. The American Civil War ends with the victory of the Union.

The 13th amendment is added to the constitution, banning slavery on a federal level. The state to most recently ratify the amendement was Mississippi, in 1995.
