FDR is elected to his third term as President of the United States.
President Franklin Delanoe Roosevelt was the first and only president to ever go on for an unprecedented third term in office. He was the United States of America's thirty-second presedent. -
U.S. Congress reintroduced the draft
The U.S. congress approved the first peacetime conscription draft in anticipation of possible American involvment in WWII. -
Lend-Lease Act is approved.
This was a program that allowed the U.S to give supplies to the Allies in Europe. Cost $50.1 billion in suppies, which in present time would be nearly $647 billion. -
RKO Pictures releases Citizen Kane
This film was a drama that was way ahead of its time and was directed by Orson Welles. It was voted the greartest movie of all time for many years. The film won nine awards. -
Mount Rushmore is completed
Great giant granite mountain side with the faces of the greatest presidents. Brought a lot of tourism in South Dakota. Was not actually completed but was stopped for lack of money. -
Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor
The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was a suprise attack on the United State's Naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The Japanese did it to prevent the United States from interfering with the Japanese military actions. -
Executive order 9066 is signed ordering Japanese-Americans to be held in relocation camps.
The Executive order 9066 was authorizing the Secretary of war to prescribe certain areas as military zones, and relocated the Japanese that lived in the United States of America to internment camps. Nearly 120,000 Japanese were held for the duration of the war. -
Battle of Midway
The Battle of Midway was the most importan naval battle in World War II. THe Japanese planned to put the U.S. aircraft carriers in a trap and gain control of the pacigic. The United States of America's code breakers were able to find the location and date of the attack and the U.S.A. was able to sink 4 aircraft carries and a heavy cruiser with only the cost of one aircraft carrier and a destroyer. -
Detroit, Michigan Race Riots
Tension increased between the blacks and the whites. Th whites felt threatened that the blacks were taking their homes jobs communities and churches. one day a black man was said to insult a white mans girl friend and the fight between the two led to a brawl between the races and they fought in the streets of Detroit. -
Manhattan Project begins.
The Manhattan Project was a research and development program that created the first atomic bomb during World War II. The program ended up costing aboput $2 billion and employed about 130,000 people. -
D-Day (Operation Overload)
The battle of Normandy was the battle that launched the invasion of German occupied Europe. D-Day was the beginning of the end of the war. -
G.I. Bill of Rights signed into law
A law that provided a range of benifits for men returning from World War II. This law helped military men get "back on their feet" after returning, whether it be money to go back to school or low costing mortages. -
Americns land at Iwo Jima
A month long battle that was between the U.S.A. and Japan. The U.S. armed forces were attempting to capture the island and were successful after a long very grusome battle. -
Harry S. Trueman becomes President
Hrry S. Truman became president after president Roosevelt's death from declining bad health. Trueman was the president to end the World War II. -
Germany Surrenders
Germany signe an unconditional surrender at allied headquarters in Reims, France, to end the European conflict of World War II. -
The Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
The U.S.A. dropped nuclear bombs on Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The nuclear bombs used were the only nuclear weapons used in war to date. -
First meeting of the United Nations General Assembly
51 nations were present during the meeting. The meeting was heald in Westminster, London. They discussed important questions, recomendations, electoral matters, buget matters and such. -
National Basketball Association of America is founded
The National Basketball Association of America was founded in New York, New York. The NBA was founded by owners of major Hockey arenas in the United States and Canada. -
Jackie Robinson debuts at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers
Jackie Robinson was the very first Black Major Legue Baseball player. Robinson broke the color line and was a big influence to ending racial segregation. -
Marshall Plan
The Marshall plan was an American program to help rebuild the economies of the European countries. The U.S.A. wanted to rebuild Europe again and make it prosperous once again. -
President Truman is re-elected
Harry S. Truman won the1948 presidential election. Truman won with 303 of the electoral votes, 24,179,247 popular votes and carried 28 states. -
NATO is formed
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was made to protect North American and Eurpean countries from attack, primarily by the USSR. The treaty stated that if any one of the members were attacked, all the rest would come to their aid.
