  • Republican party formed

    Founded by Abraham Lincoln in spite of the Democratic party.
  • Kansas- Nebraska Act

    A major build-up to the Civil War. It was a law that was made to replace the Missouri compromise
  • Abraham Lincoln elected president

    Without the support of any southern states he still managed to win the role of president.
  • South Carolina votes to secede from the United States

    When Lincoln was elected president that meant that the South would no longer have anymore slave states. South Carolina didn't want to be associated with the United States anymore so they decided to break away.
  • Richmond becomes the capital of the confederacy

    When Virginia left the Union they decided they needed a capitol for the Confederate people so they chose the 2nd biggest city to be the capitol, Richmond
  • Jefferson Davis elected president of Confederacy

    Jefferson Davis elected president of Confederacy
    Jefferson Davis was a graduate of West Point academy and a celebrated soldier in the Mexican war. When Davis was sworn into office in 1861 he immediately sent a peace commission to Washington to try and reconcile. Then Lincoln sent out ships to resupply Fort Sumter but Davis sent out ships to attack the food supply which was the start of the Civil War.

  • Robert E. Lee named commander of the army of North VA

    Robert E Lee become a general by resigning from the US army from the 1861 telling friends that telling friends that he could not in an invasion of the south
  • First Battle of Bull Run is fought

    The first major land battle that is fought in the Civil War. A win for the Union.
  • The Merrimac and the Monitor fight of the Virginia coast

    The North was the "winner" of this battle even though it was never declared which side actually won. The North was able to block the South from coming through.
  • Battle of Shiloh

    A union victory. The Union was surprised by the confederates but they still fought hard and won the battle.
  • Battle of Antietam

    Battle of Antietam
    A union victory. With over 23,000 deaths. The Union was also able to stop the Confederates from invading the North.
  • Battle of Fredricksburg

    One of the deadliest battles of the Civil war. The Confederates won the war and the Federals failed to advance in Confederates land and take their capitol of Richmond.
  • Emancipation Proclamation announced

    The emancipation Proclamation was brought up by president Lincoln which declared that "that all persons held as slaves are, henceforward shall be free."
  • Battle of Chancellorsvile

    A Confederate victory. Robert E Lee split his army in half and surprised the Union with the other half of the army.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    A three day battle during the Civil War where more than 7,000 people died in. This was between the Confederates and the Union.
  • Confederates surrender at Vicksburg

    A 47 day battle ended with the confederates surrendering. The commander of the confederates in this battle was John Pemberton and the Union commander was Ulysses S Grant. The end of the war gave the Union control of the Mississippi river and split Confederacy into two.
  • New York City draft riots

    A riot that made the Civil War to start drafting
  • Lincoln suspends habeas corpus

    Lincoln temporarily gets rid of the source of unlawful imprisonments
  • Lincoln gives Gettysburg Address speech

    A 2 hour speech given by Abraham about the government that has fallen and about liberty and equality
  • Atlanta is captured

    Atlanta is captured
    Union forces capture Atlanta. Confederacy forced to abandon it
  • Lincoln defeats McClellan for re-election

    Lincoln wins the majority again and defeats McClellan with ease.
  • Sherman begins his march to the sea

    A destructive campaign in Atlanta about civilian population
  • Congress passing the 13th amendment

    The 13th amendment is the abolishment of slavery
  • Freedman's bureau is created

    An act that allowed for the newly freed slaves to get food, shelter and any medical services.
  • Lincoln gives his second inaugural address

    At his second inauguration Lincoln tries to inform everyone why this war started and that slavery was a sin.
  • Richmond falls to the Union Army

    The Union went for the capitol of the confederates and succeeded to capture their main supply source and their capitol
  • Robert E. Lee surrenders at Appomattox

    Robert E. Lee surrenders at Appomattox
    A significant battle in the Civil War because they knew they were finally getting to the end of the war. Another win for the Union and Ulysses S Grant.
  • President Lincoln's Assassination

    President Lincoln's Assassination
    Abraham Lincoln was killed at the Ford's Theater by a guy named John Wilkes Booth. It is believed that Booth was driven to kill Lincoln because of Lincoln's beliefs of slavery, confederacy and his Booth's hatred for Lincoln's presidency.
