    The first temporary peace walls were put up in 1969. However, since the people of Northern Ireland felt they couldn't live together peacefully, the walls were later made permanent. Today, there are around 50 peace walls in Northern Ireland.

    In August 1969, violence in Northern Ireland escalated, marking a turning point in the Troubles. It started with the Battle of the Bogside in Derry from August 12 to 14. A Protestant parade by the Apprentice Boys passed near the Catholic Bogside area, which led to riots. Clashes broke out between Catholic residents and the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC). Protesters built barricades, and the RUC used tear gas and batons to push back, but the fighting lasted for days.

    The British government introduces internment without trial, as a operation named "Demetrius" Armed soliders raided at dawn, and lead to the arrest of 342 people that was suspected of being involved with the IRA.

    Bloody Sunday happened on January 30, 1972, in Derry, Northern Ireland. A big group of people were protesting against internment without trial, where people were arrested without a court case. The British Army was sent to stop the protest, and things got tense. Some protesters threw rocks, and the soldiers responded with tear gas and rubber bullets.
    Then, they started shooting with real bullets. 13 people died at the spot, 1 died later of injuries

    Northern Ireland has come a long way, but there are still problems. The peace walls still divide people, and some still throw trash and bottles over them because they see the other side as the enemy. They are still healing from the Troubles, and they keep moving forward
