Before the war had began, Vladek and others remember a commotion that had arrisen in town. When they turned around, they saw a large nazi flag hanging in the air in the center of town. -

Vladek recieved a draft notice inthe polish reserves army and had to leave right away. -
The start of WWII
The war came. Vladek was on the front when the war started. -
Vladek captured and taken to POW
Vladek captured by German soldiers. He is taken to a prisoner of war camp. Soon after, Poland is defeated in WW2. -
War Crime
Vladek shoots and kills a German soldier. The soldier attempts to surrender, and Vladek continues to gun him down. -
Vladek returns to Sosnowiec
Vladek surprises Anja and returns to Sosnowiec after being released from the POW camp and sneaking across the Poland-Germany boarder. -

Vladek at the train station
Vladek was going to see Ilzecki, who lived close to the train station. As he passed the train station, he saw the nazi's grabbing jews, even if they had papers. He luckily saw Ilzecki who hid him and saved his life. -
Order
Wolfe came in from the gemeinder in a frenzy yelling, "look! they're putting these up all over town." These were posters with the word ORDER written in bold at the top informing the Jews of Sosnowiec that they all must be relocated by January 1 1942. -
Anja's grandparents leave Sosnowiec
Anja's grandparents were told they were being taken to Reisenstadt, a place better equiped to take care of the elderly. However, they were actually taken to Auschwitz. -
Vladek's father is deported
During a mass inspection, Vladek's father is taken from his ghetto. He is later dies in and Auschwitz gas chamber. -
Richieu
Richieu and two other children are sent to a woman to keep them safe. In the spring, the Nazi's began to grab children and beat them. They took over 1,000 children to Auschwitz, and when their caretaker heard of the news, she poisoned the kids. -
Richieu Killed
Months after sending Richieu to Zawiercie the Germans murdered the entire ghetto. -
Vladek woks as a tinman

--In the Spring of 1944, Vladek worked as a tinman in Auschwitz. -
Vladek becomes a shoemaker
Vladek began to repair shoes by repairing Yidle's boots. He then uses his shoe repair skills as a survival tactic. As he fixed officials shoes, they offered him immunity and safety. He also helped Anja when her kapo (who did not like her) had a ripped shoe and sent it to Vladek. He repaired it and from then on, the Kapo was much nicer to Anja. -
Vladek sees Anja/Anja to barracks in Auschwitz
After Vladek saved up a second time and bribing officers to bring Anja closer to him, he saw a few thousand women in the new barracks in Auschwitz and among them, was Anja -
Auschwitz is evacuated
This evacuation is are commonly known as Death Marches because they were forcible movements of prisoners in Nazi Germany. -
Vladek goes to Dachau
Vladek and many others from Auschwitz are sent to Dachau by train and held in these trains for long periods of time. Vladek was a survivor of these trains because he hooked his blanket to a hook that was used to chain animals and held himself up so that he could rest/breathe. -
Swiss Border
The stronger Jews were sent to the Swiss border to be exchanged as was prisoners. Vladek became stronger and his health began to progress. Vladek and other Jews were put on a train, but they never made it to Switzerland. They were taken off the train, marched to a freight train, and then taken by the Americans. -
WWII is over
Japan surrenders on August 15, 1945 and the surrender documents are signed on the deck of the American battleship USS Missouri. -
Anja's Death
Anja Spiegelman takes her own life. -
Vladek's Death
After many complications with his body, Vladek dies of congestive heart failure. He was burried next to his deceased wife Anja and had a Jewish Star on their tombstone.
