Sophie (his wife) was also assassinated alongside him by Bosnian Serb student Gavrilo Princip. They were shot at close range while being driven through Sarajevo, the provincial capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, formally annexed by Austria-Hungary in 1908.

    March 1st, 1917 Hoke was sent to Europe in 1917, while on the train to get to the very front of the war, they had no bathrooms and barely any food. The train ride took 3 whole days to get to the front of the war.

    March 6th, 1917 Hoke and other soldiers were billeting in a village in France. Lots of the soldiers had to go barefoot due to the rain and snow and many more reasons. They were starting to run low on uniforms and shoes and just all supplies in general.

    March 9th,1917 was the first time going over the top on the front, in an attempt to capture Germans to get more information about the war, Hoke lost a good friend he also lost some of the men in his team he recruited over the top. Hoke was promoted to Sergeant, he went on many recon missions along the German trenches. His whole group of men that were doing missions alongside Hoke were all without pistols at the time, until their Colonel got brand new Colt 45 automatic pistols for the group.

    March 12th, 1917 Hoke's division served on every major front, every major battle throughout the war. Out of 248 men, 80 of them were killed and only 28 went without wounding. Hokes younger brother joined a separate company from his brother, but still in the same division. After he got into the trenches, Hoke transferred his brother into his company.

Hoke's brother, the soldier said he was also trying to find Hoke and they happened to find each other in the middle of nowhere.
