1940s Computer Inventions

  • Z3 Machine

    Z3 Machine
German Inventor Konrad Zuse invented the worlds earliest digital computer by 1941. It is said that the computer was destroyed in Berlin during World War 2.
  • Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC)

    Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC)
The ABC was invented by physics professor John Vincent Atanasoff and his students at Iowa State University. This computer was designed to solve complex math problems at the same time. It was able to design up to 29 linear equations and it was considered to be one of the first electronic digital computers.
  • The Start of ENIAC

    The Start of ENIAC
John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert invented the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator(ENIAC). This is the world's first general purpose computer. It was the first computer one could prgram however, it could take days because of the complex process.
  • Williams-Kilburn Tube

    Williams-Kilburn Tube
Freddie Williams and Tom Kilburn developed the Williams-Kilburn Tube. This was a memory system that could sore between 512 - 2048 bits of data. This data would be converted to dots and was widely known to be used for TV screens.
  • Transistor

    Transistor
Invented by Walter Brattain, William Shockley, and John Bardeen. These microscopic switches control the flow of electricity. They are very important for modern technology as these are the most important part of a microchip.
