African American Civil Rights Movement Timeline

  • 13th Amendment

    The 13th Amendment was passed on January 31st, 1865, but was ratified on December 6th, 1865. This Amendment is what abolished slavery and involuntary servitude. This would be categorized as a Constitutional Amendment.
  • 14th Amendment

    The 14th Amendment was passed by congress on June 13th, 1866, and was ratified on July 9th, 1868. This Amendment was what gave everyone birthright citizenship and equal protection under the law. This would be categorized as a Constitutional Amendment.
  • 15th Amendment

    The 15th Amendment was passed on February 26th, 1869, and was ratified on February 3rd, 1870. This Amendment is what prohibited federal and state government from denying US citizens from voting based off their race.
  • Plessy V. Ferguson

    Plessy V. Ferguson was a court case in which Plessy who was basically white, but had an African great grandfather (the one drop rule), and decided to sit in a "Whites Only" area in order to go against the law. He was arrested because the court said it didn't violate the 14th amendment since it said, "separated but equal" meaning that their would be accommodations to blacks and whites.
  • Wilmington Coup

    The Wilmington Coup was a massacre that happened in 1898, the white population overthrew a majority black government. Around 300 black residents were killed. This would be classified as a Violent Action.
  • Formation of the NAACP

    The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was a civil rights organization formed in 1909 in order to give advance justice for African Americans. This would be categorized as a formation of an organization.
  • Truman desegregated the US Military

    On July 26th, 1948, President Harry Truman signed an executive order that gave equal treatment and service to everyone, and desegregated white and black people. This would be categorized as executive orders from Presidents.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas

    Brown vs. Board Education was the court case that outlawed segregation in schools. This is categorized as a supreme court case.
  • Emmett Till's Murder

    Emmett Till was a young 14 year old black boy who was brutally killed after falsely being accused of cat calling a white woman, even though he has just whistled at her with no bad intentions. An executive order was recently passed on lynching and is now seen as a hate crime. This is categorized as laws.
  • Rosa Parks is arrested/Montgomery Bus Boycott

    On December 1st, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passenger which got her arrested. This led to the 381 days boycott of public transportation during the Civil Rights before they were desegregated. This is categorized as Formation of an Organization.
  • Little Rock Nine

    Little Rock Nine is where the first nine Black students were integrated into Little Rock Central High School in 1957. This was a key action in the Civil Rights Movement, since it helped end segregation in schools. This is categorized as Formation of an Organization.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1957

    The Civil Rights Act of 1957 was a legislation bill that was meant to allow African Americans to be able to vote without having to pass the literacy test. However this bill failed to do so. This would be categorized as an Executive Order by the President.
  • Greensboro Sit-In

    A group of young African American students, would go down to Woolworth's Lunch Counter in Greensboro North Carolina and staged a sit-in, since this was a segregated area. They wouldn't be served and refused to leave. This would be categorized as a Protests.
