On the 13th of May 1787 the First Fleet began its journey to the new settlement in New Holland (Australia). There were to many convicts in the London jail so they were sending convicts to the settlement to start a new colony. There were 11 small ships in the First Fleet. Captain Arthur Phillip was in charge. On board were about 1500 people.

The members of the First Fleet went ashore to Port Jackson to start settlement. Arthur Phillip called the place Sydney Cove after Lord Sydney.

Matthew Flinders circumnavigated Australia. Mathew Flinders was a very successful navigator and cartographer in his age. He was asked by the British government to completely map the coastline of Australia. At the time, Western Australia was called New Holland and Matthew Flinders was the one that suggested the name of Australia.

Officers of the New South Wales Corps marched into the Government House in an act of rebellion against Governor William Bligh. He was arrested and the colony was placed under military rule.
