Identity versus Inferiority
Emilia (15) is experimenting with a new "emo" style to fit in and find herself within her new group of school friends. The central conflict for adolescents is finding their place in society or within their culture. During this stage, adolescents experiment with roles and values to find the ones that align with them. If adolescents find values and goals that resonate with them, they will have a clear and healthy sense of self. If not, they will struggle with insecurity and identity confusion. -

During this stage, one is tasked with maintaining healthy and meaningful friendships and intimate relationships. In order to succeed at this stage, one must have a stable sense of self. If successful in this stage, one can maintain long-lasting relationships throughout life. If unsuccessful, one will struggle to form meaningful relationships and face isolation and/or loneliness. -
Generativity versus Stagnation
Emilia (40) has a full-time job as a CNA and volunteers at her daughter's school when she can. During this stage, one must focus on becoming a productive member of society by being active within their communities, homes, and jobs. Those who are successful in this stage feel as though they are giving back to their communities. Those who are unsuccessful will face stagnation because they are not involved in social activities and may feel disconnected from society.
