When Missouri wanted to become a state, it tried to enter the union as a slave state. However, there were already 11 slave sates and 11 free states. Many people believed that if it entered as a slave state, it would tip the scales in favor of slave states. The Missouri Compromise allowed it to enter as a slave state, but made importing slaves into Missouri illegal and all the children of the slaves would be free.

After Texas tried to break apart from Mexico and become independent, Mexico tried to attack Texas and kill the rebellion. The most famous sight of this civil war was the Alamo, where about 200 Texans held the fort against around 2,000 Mexican soldiers in order to stall for a bigger Texan army to get there. All Texans defending the Alamo died, but Texas won the war because of them.
