On January 19, 2001, ‘El Chapo’ (‘shorty’ in English) escaped a maximum security prison for which he was serving 20 years for charges “related to murder and drug trafficking”
‘Shorty’ standing at 5’6”, was most known for being the head of the Sinaloa Cartel, which manufactured meth, heroine, and marijuana, and smuggled multi-ton shipments of cocaine, along with the listed non-legal substances mentioned. -
9/11 clean up
9/12/2001 Film and tv industry workers, helped clean and light up Ground Zero. They lit up the Ruby 7, a film industry mobile light.
Due to toxic smoke exposure and inhalation, cardiovascular diseases and respiratory illnesses are reported to be higher in 9/11 responders. There is also an increase of asthma and other respiratory illnesses cases in school children. -

S type was Jaguar’s fastest selling model, probably due to its 400 horsepower, supercharged V8 engine, while also providing comfort. -

Darfur War started in February 2003 in Sudan. A group identified themselves as the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) and attacked government buildings, causing the government to respond, causing a full-scale war against Darfur’s non-Arab communities. -

During this war, more than 100,000 Iraqi civilians were killed. These lives were lost because the executive branch wanted to end Saddam Hussein’s presidency.
War was fought from March-April 2003 (11,000-15,000), and U.S. troops stayed. This micromanagement cause mass casualties. -
An entire DNA has been sequenced for the first time
The Human Genome Project was completed on April 14, 2003. The goal of the project was to sequence an entire DNA sequence.
Took more than a decade and $2.7 billion, now TGen can sequence an entire DNA by the end of the day, simultaneously along with 80 others for only a couple hundred dollars.
With this technology, early detection, gene therapy, and an overall improvement of the practice of medicine was made possible. -
Twin rovers landed on Mars
Spirit, which landed on January 4, 2004. Its twin rover, Opportunity, landed on January 25, 2004
Spirit and Opportunity each carried tributes to victims of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 200. Spirit had a piece of aluminum which was recovered from the World trade center collapse. -
Famous painting stolen for the 2nd time
On February 12, 2004, Edvard Munch's The Scream was stolen for the second time.
The painting was inspired by “a gust of melancholy.” This painting was painted in 1893, after a Munch panic attack in 1892. -

Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Act expired on September 13, 2004. part of the Now AR-rifles were able to be bought legally. -

December 26, 2004, Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami occurred. This happened near the coast of Indonesia, and dozens of countries were affected, causing almost 230,000 deaths. -

Twilight was published on September 27, 2005. The book became the 5th best selling book from 2004-2021. -

February 10-26 of 2006, the winter olympics occurred in Italy. Although, US did not win as many medals as the previous winter olympics, history was made, Davis was the first African American to win an individual gold medal. -
Swift raids
December 12, 2006, ICE (US Immigration and Customs Enforcement) coordinated the Swift raids. These meat packing plants have 4x the rate of injury and illness for all industries. Among other capitalist organizations, Swift exploited immigrant labor to create profits for low low wages. Some children were left in a church center after their parents didn’t show up. -

On Monday, April 16, 2007, the Virginia Tech shootings happened. There were two attacks killing 32 people and wounding 23 (6 jumped out windows to escape). This is currently the 3rd largest mass shooting in the US. -

January 22, 2008, Heath Ledger died of an overdose. His most famous role in The Dark Knight, would be released later that year. -
First African American President
On January 20, 2009, Obama was inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States. His first acts as president were to improve access to healthcare, establish fair pay, and create a Recovery Act. -
