Middle English is often arbitrarily defined as beginning with the conquest of England by William the Conqueror in 1066, but developed further in the period from 1200 to 1450.
First, waves of Norse colonization of the northern parts of the British Isles in the 8th and 9th centuries brought Old English into intense contact with Old Norse, a North Germanic language. The Norse influence was strongest in the northeastern varieties of Old English spoken in the Danelaw area around York. -
The more standardized Old English language became fragmented, localized, and for the most part improvised. At the end of the period (around 1470) and with the help of the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenbergen in 1439, a standard based on the London dialect was established this largely formed the basis of modern English spelling, although the pronunciation has changed considerably since then.
