Tabulating Machine
There was once a time when the U.S. Censure responses were read over and the results were gathered and recorded by hand. Engineer, Herman Hollerith, would invent a machine to revolutionize and quicken the speed of census recording.. This machine would take results that have been turned into punchcards and read them at an incredibly fast speed. https://youtu.be/Kvk3_MfF7SA?feature=shared

The grand merge
Before IBM, there was the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company. C-T-R was born through the merge of three different technology companies. These companies were:
International Time Recording Company
Tabulating Machine Company
Computing Scale Company https://www.ibm.com/history/ctr-and-ibm -
Synchronized Clocks
Before modern computational technology, one of the many inventions C-T-R had under their belt was a synchronized clock system These clocks would be in large, multi-room buildings such as factories and schools. These systems would have a master clock, which would send electronic pulses that would tell the other clocks to change their ticking speed in order to match the time of the main clock. https://medium.com/@steveharding_76362/a-vintage-ibm-clock-37bf77035ac0 -
IBM got its name
An important rebrand that would last until current day. By going by International Business Machines, IBM would begin to expand its reach into technological advances. -
The Mark I
This early computer was made to solve advanced mathematical problems and took up the entire wall of the room it was installed in. https://chsi.harvard.edu/harvard-ibm-mark-1-about

ARPAnet
IBM heavily promoted ARPAnet and utilized it to create a product ordering system for its users. -
IBM 701
The 700's series was IBM's first line of commercial computers. These computers were first distributed during the Korean war to handle heavy military computations.

IBM 650
The IBM 650 was the first mass-produced computer made by the company. This computer was marketed to computer scientists and engineers, but it also was used in the business sector. It was able to do calculations, as well as store accounting data. https://www.ibm.com/history/650 -
IBM's First Use of Ethical Hacking
During the research and development of their more complex computers, IBM hired a team of "ethical hackers" to find the ins and outs of the software. These found exploits would be patched and left invulnerable when the computers were ready for commercial release. https://cribbcs.net/cyber-security-history/#:~:text=In%201967%20IBM%20challenged%20students,moving%20to%20develop%20defensive%20measures. -
