    Industrial Revolution

    Period of technological and mechanical advancements starting in Great Britain and eventually spreading throught Europe. New technologies like the steam engine, spinning jenny, and telegraph allowed for mass production of goods in factories, rather than by hand.
  • Opium Wars

    Conflicts mainly between Britain and China over an opium ban. It resulted in China signing unfair treaties over who can trade where.
  • Treaty of Nanjing

    It was a treaty that ended the first opium war, and is considered the first unequal treaties in China. In it, Hong Kong is given to Britain, and British merchants were allowed to trade with any Chinese merchant.

    Samurai and court nobles overthrew the shogunate and restored power to the emperor, Mutsuhito, who took the reign name Meiji. The goals were to modernize Japan and adopting some western culture.

    The Russo-Japanese War was a military conflict fought between the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan from 1904 to 1905.
