This made people start wanting the top floors in apartments instead of the bottom ones because they did not need to be close to the door. Today we have buildings that are hundreds of stories tall and we really need elevators. -

In crowded cities people realize it would save space if we built upwards. Now we have giant skyscrapers and if those floors were all separate buildings, we would have no room. -

The automobile is invented and makes transportation easier. These automobiles evolve into the cars we depend on every day. -

Basketball is invented by James Naismith while he is teaching at the YMCA. Now basketball is one of the most popular sports worldwide. -
FDA (Food & Drug Administration)
After the book "The Jungle" was written, exposing how meat manufacturing companies were letting rats into the meat, people decide to change that. Now all food has to be checked by the FDA to make sure it is clean. -
Triangle Shirtwaist Company Fire
When this fire started they were not ready. The fire escape gave out because there were too many people on it and no one could open the pull doors because everyone was storming the exit. This event started building safety laws like how all doors in commercial buildings must open to the side or open outward -
Titanic Disaster
The "Unsinkable" Titanic hit an iceberg, and all the water filled up one side of the boat. This caused it to tip forward and break in half causing over 1,500 to die. We now have many rules and regulations for safety on cruise ships. -
Panama Canal
The Panama Canal is built across a five-year span. This shortened the trip by 8,000 miles and about 5 months.
