Addams founded the Hull House for the urban poor, and much of her life's work was dedicated to thier benifit. She was a pioneer in settlement work, and strongly advocated womens rights. She is one of the best known progressive reformers. From 1919 to 1935 she was the president of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. This Magazine argued the advantages of womens, racial, and political equality, among other progressive issues. The Anti-Saloon League was formed in 1893. Unlike previous groups, the new organization focused its effort on prohibiting alcohol rather than dissueding indeviduals from drinking. Supported by Protestant churches, it backed only “dry” candidates for elected office. This strategy worked, and by 1917 almost two thirds of the states had banned the manufacture and sale of alcohol. He believed in radical concepts such as the formation of a "world nation" as a necessity, which would support societal advancement, the end to natoinalism, and wealth based on merit, not birth. His early work was primarily science fiction, but he became more involved in politics in the twenties.
