7 states seceded from the Union. They were South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, and Texas. This was an advantage for the South because they could fight on their own territory.

Jefferson Davis Becomes the New President of The CSA
Jefferson Davis becomes the new president of the CSA. This is beneficial for the South because the South feels like they have very solid leadership in Jefferson Davis. They believe that he will be very helpful and loyal to them so it gives them a little bit of confidence in him.

Fort Sumter
Confederate cannons opened fire at 4:30 A.M. when the North was unprepared to attack and lasted 34 hours. The South won because in the end, Major Robert Anderson surrendered to CSA General P.G.T. Beauregard.

R.E. Lee Turns Down Union Command
Robert E Lee, the current general for the South, rejects president Lincoln's offer to command the North's army. He said that he opposes slavery and secession: "Yet, how can I draw my sword upon Virginia." It helps the South because they know that they have a leader that they can trust and who won't leave them.

This was a good victory for the South because they had one the first battle and it gave them a load of confidence and hope that they can win the war.

Battle Between Ironclad Ships Ends in a Draw
The Union's Monitor and the Confederate's Merrimac battled at sea and ended in a draw. Neither side actually "won" but I think that the South beat the North because it shows that the South can fight the North at sea without having to retreat or lose horribly. It also shows that the North can barely fend off the South so it gives the South some confidence.

North Loses the 7 Days' Battle to the South
The South has won the 7 Days' Battle. Out of the many battles fought over those seven days, the South had beaten the North in 4 of the 5 battles fought between them. This is beneficial for the South because it forced McClellan's army to retreat to the James River and it lowered the Union's prestige.

The Confederates Win the Second Battle of Bull Run.
The North and the South returned to Bull Run Creek/Manassas Junction and fought a battle which ended with the same results as the the first Bull Run/Manassas Junction. This benefits the South because it's another victory against the North and it leaves room for the South to invade the North.

Sioux Uprising Put Down In Minnesota
The Siuox Indians harassed the North and killed more than 800 settlers when the Sioux raided them. The chief of the Sioux was Little Crow. This was an advantage for the South because they didn't have to fight but the numbers in the North went down because the Sioux killed so many of them.

Union Disaster at Fredericksburg; Burnside Replaced
The Confederates win again in Fredericksburg,Virginia. The Union attack was commanded by General Ambrose Burnside. It failed. More than 12,000 Federals were killed. This is an advantage for the South because it has cut a big chunk out of the North's army and it has forced President Lincoln to switch generals again.

President Lincoln Issues Proclamation to Free Slaves
President Jefferson Lincoln created the Emancipation Proclamation which states that all slaves in rebellious states are free of bondage. It began the movement to end slavery throughout the United States and affected regions of the Confederacy.

Gettysburg-A Crucial Union Victory
This is a big victory for the North because the North withstood many Rebel charges and about 13,000 men. Lee had failed to invade the North again and the South had probably lost some hope in Lee.

President Lincoln Signs First Draft Law
The nation's first ever draft law went into effect.This law places laibility on all male citizens between the ages of 20-45. Men who are physically or mentally unfit, who have certain types of dependents, or who are felons are exempted from the draft law. This law ensures a strong Union military force.

Lee Wins Pyrrich Victory at Chancellorsville
Even though the Confederates won this battle, they lost their second in command, General Stonewall Jackson. He was probably one of their best generals. Because Stonewall Jackson is now gone, the Union has a better chance at winning the Civil war. It certainly decreases the strategy level for the South.

Union Forces Win Chattanooga
The Union, led by George Thomas, swept up Missionary Ridge in about an hour. Now the Union has control of a key southern city and can now easily move into Georgia and Alabama with the objective of further splitting the Confederacy.

Command of Union Armies Given to Grant
President Lincoln has appointed U.S.Grant to command all armies of the United States. This benefits the North because the appointment of Grant strengthens the Union's military potential.

Lincoln Nominated for Second Term
President Lincoln is nominated to serve a second term as U.S president. His vice president was Andrew Johnson. This benefits the North because President Lincoln now has the support of his party to continue his mission to reunite the country and pull a Union victory.

Confederate Draft Expanded
This doesn't benefit the South very much. It shows that they are very desperate for more soldiers. The new age requirement is 17-50. They now have even younger, inexperienced boys and older, less able to fight men.

Farragut Captures Key Port of Mobile Bay
This once again shows how superior the Union is at sea.They closed down the port. The Union has another very important victory and is one step closer to Atlanta, Georgia. It is also beneficial for Lincoln's campaign and should impress some voters.

Sherman Captures Atlanta
General William T.Sherman's Union troops capture the key southern city of Atlanta, Georgia. They fought several battles as they approached it but in the end, Rebel forces evacuated the city on September 1. This is beneficial for the North because it aids Lincoln on his re-election and it's another city the North has control of.

Federals Take Petersburg and Occupy Richmond
The Union led by U.S Grant have captured the region around Petersburg and the Rebel capital Richmond. This is an advantage for the North because they have captured the Rebel capital and have a victory at Petersburg.

Lee Surrenders to Grant
Lee has officially surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Union General Ulysses S.Grant. The terms of surrender are the surrender of the Confederate Army and turning over Rebel arms and supplies. The Rebels could keep private horses and arms. This is a win for the North because they have officially won the war and the fighting and the losing of lives is now over.

President Lincoln is Killed by Assassin's Bullet
President Lincoln is assasinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 14th even though he died on the 15th. Booth came up behind Lincoln and shot him in the head. Lincoln was taken to a house across the street where he died at 7:22 the next morning. This benefits the South actually because one of the key people in the Union''s victory is now dead.

Lincoln's Assassin Captured and Killed
John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of President Lincoln, was killed when Federal troops surrounded a barn on Garret's Farm. The barn was set on fire and as Booth was trying to escape, Seargent Boston Corbett shot and killed him. He was "on the run" for about two weeks. This benefits the North because they have killed the man responsible for their president's death.

CSA President Jefferson Davis Captured in Georgia
President Davis is captured while near Irvinville,Georgia along with his wife, postmaster, and secretary. He tried to escape but the 4th Michigan Calvary prevented that from happening. He was taken to Fort Monroe, Virginia where he was imprisoned. This benefits the North because they have captured the president of the CSA which is an important person.
