PreK-1st
During these years reading was fun. In PreK and Kindergarten, I remember my teacher having puppet shows and would read books aloud to the class. We also did crafts that went along with the books the teacher would read. Reading was made fun during these years. In kindergarten and first grade, I remember trips to the library during class and being able to check out our own books. -
2nd and 3rd Grade
Reading is still enjoyable during this time. There is more emphasis on learning phonics and word patterns, but the books given to help learn are still fun. Puppet shows and crafts no longer go along with books and reading in groups or individually is more common during this time. As a class, we still make trips to the library and can pick out whatever books we want. During this time, book fairs were popular. -
4th and 5th Grade
The books we read in class now are starting to get more complex. The teachers pick the books we read and discuss during class. The books are now chapter books with no pictures. We read in a group, individually, or as a class. During this time reading is no longer something I enjoy. -
6th Grade
The teacher picks the books we read, and we are now given assignments to do that go along with the book. We would also have to do book reports and read them in front of the class. Trips to the library during school didn't happen often. In school reading felt more like a task compared to something fun to do. -
7th- 8th Grade
Teachers continue to select the books we read in class. Group discussions are used to talk about the books and group projects were done to help have a better understanding of the book we would read. In class reading was no longer fun. We had no say of what books we chose to read and write about. -
9th-10th
High school Consisted of a lot of reading for each class. From history to science, the teacher would go over the information in the textbook. The teachers still highly influenced what we read in class. I never had the urge to read outside of school. -
11th-12th
Reading in school remains the same. Books are picked by the teachers. Reading the assigned book is mostly done at home for homework. -
In my 20's
Reading was not a big part of my early 20s until I had my son. After I had him, I enjoyed spending time with him reading. We read all the picture books I read when I was little. I didn't read a lot with my parents when I was little, so I felt like it was important to do so. I still wasn't a reader myself, but I made sure to make it a point to read to my son -
Early 30's
During this time, I found books I enjoyed reading. I realized I liked thrillers, romance, and drama-themed books. A lot of the books I read were influenced by word of mouth or social media. -
Present
My attitude towards reading has completely changed from when I was younger. I now find joy in reading and I hope to pass that down to my children.
