Erlkonig
Erlkonig was written by Franz Schubert. He was inspired by German romantic poets. Erlkonig was based on a poem written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It was written in the form of Lied which is a German art song. Erlkonig is an evill creature in various German, Danish, and Scandinavian stories. He is often referred to as the God of Deathbecause he tries to lure travellers to their death. In Schuberts Erlkkonig, each characters voice symbolizes them. -
Incandescent Light Bulb
In 1800, Humphry Davy who was an English scientist invented the first incandescent electric light bulb. He experimented with electricity and invented an electric battery. When he connected wires to his battery and a piece of carbon, the carbon glowed producing light. -

Napoleon Crowned Emporer
In 1804, Notre Dame Cathedral crowned the first frenchman to hold the title of emperor in a thousand years.Napoleon Bonaparte had become Napoleon I.Leading up to his coronation, Napoleon was one of the greatest military strategists.He saved his nation from collapse after taking over the reigns of the French government.In 1802 he established the Napoleonic Code and in 1804 established the French Empire.Napoleon was able to stretch his empire from River Elber down to Italy to the Dalmatian coast. -
Erie Canal
The Erie Canal was formed to improve transportation from the interior and beyond the barrier of the Appalachian Mountains. The Erie Canal connects the port of New York City at the Hudson River to Buffalo New York then flowing to the North East coast of Lake Erie. -
Telegraph
Samuel Soemmering invented the first crude telegraph in Bavaria 1809. He used thirty five wires with gold electrodes in water to send out a mesage and used the amount of gas caused by electrolysis to recieve the message. However, in 1828 Harrison Dyar invented the first telegraph in the United States. Dyar sent electrical sparks through chemically treated paper tape to burn dots and dashes. -
Piano Trio opus 63
Aside from Ludwig Van Beethovens notable works, there are over 849 unknown works. Several Hundreds of these have been recorded at some point and the rest have never been recorded nor published. His Piano Trio opus 63 was considered “the unobtainable work”. It was finally recorded in 2003. This Piano Trio is an adaptation of the string quartet opus 4 and is also said to be a warm performance. -
Frederic Chopin
Chopin is remembered today as the composer of the most challenging and subjective music of keyboard repertoire. In some of his music he poured out his reaction to what was happening to poland. One piece specifically that showed this was his Etude in C minor, op.10. Chopin gradually began to aquire a reputation in both France and Germany. His works included waltzes,mazurkas,etudes,and preludes. Chopin was a virtuoso who could move from dash of watlzes to brutal emotions of his sonatas. -
Star Spangled Banner
The Star Spangled Banner song originated from a poem written by Francis Scott Key in 1814. He wrote this poem in Maryland in the middle of the War of 1812. Key wrote this while watching the British bombardment of Fort McHenry which explains the text. This poem was later set to music in 1931 when it became America’s National Anthem. -
Clara Josephine Schumann
Clara Josephine Schumann was born into a musical family on September 13, 1819 in Germany. In 1828, at the age of nine, Clara performed for the first time in the Leipzig Gewandhaus and made her formal debut at the age of eleven. Clara was one of the few pianists of her time to perform music from memory. In addition,not only did she promote her own compositions, but introduced the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, Domenico Scarlatti, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, and Robert Schumann. -
Electro Magnet
William Sturgeon, a British inventor, revealed an invention in 1825 that began a large evolution in electronic communications. He created the electromagnet that he displayed by lifting nine pounds. This electromagnet was a seven ounce piece of iron wrapped with wires through which the current of a single battery was sent. This lead to an evolution because the true power of the electromagnet is what lead to the creation of countless inventions for the future. -
Johannes Brahms
Brahms was born in Germany on May 7 1833. Although he was part of the romantic era, he was attached to the Classical ideas of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. Brahms' symphonies,choral and vocal works, chamber music and piano pieces contain strong emotional feeling. His most ambitious work was the German Requiem which is his reinterpretation of age-old form. Brahms' Symphony No.1 was characterized as "Beethoven's Tenth" because they composed similar works. -
Antonin Dvorak
Antonin Dvorak is a Czeck Republic composer know to base his compositions on folk music of his native Bohemia. While in the U.S, Dvorak became the director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York City. He studied African-American and Native American melodies and noticed the pentatonic scale was prominent. Some of Dvorak’s compositions using the pentatonic melody are the New World Symphony and the String Quartet in F Major, op. 96(“American”). -
Communist Manifesto
The Communist Manifesto is an 1848 politcal pamphlet written by Karl Marx and Freidrich Engles. It discusses the Communists' theory of history and the relationship between proletarians and bourgeoisie. It also explains the relationship between the Communists and the proletarians. As well as discusses the relationship between the Communists and other parties. -
Hungarian Rhapsody No.2
Franz Lizst wrote nineteen Hungarian Rhapsodys, however, number 2 is the most recognizable one. It is derived from melodies that Lizst had heard in the western part of Hungary. This rhapsody is used frequent in classic cartoons. Such as The Cat Concerto with Tom and Jerry, Convict Concerto with Woody Woodpecker, and Rhapsody Rabbit with Bugs Bunny. The original rhapsody for piano was written in C# minor which then went to F# minor and finsihed in F# major. -
La Traviata
Giuseppe Verdi composed this opera in 1853. This opera mirrored his own life in a way. At this time it was frowned upon for an unwed couple to live together. In La Traviata Violette and Alfredo weren’t married at first. This mirrors Verdi’s life because he lived with Giuseppina Strepponi for twelve years before they married. This opera was also a way for Verdi to reform political conventions. -
Steinway & Sons
Steinway & Sons was founded on March 5, 1853 by German immigrant Henry Engelhard Steinway. Henry was a master cabinet maker who built his first piano in the kitchen of his Seesen, Germany home. By the time Henry established Steinway & Sons, he had built 482 pianos. The first piano produced by the company, number 483, was sold to a New York family for $500. From then on Steinway & Sons pianos have evolved and become the best pianos they can be. -
Die Walkure
Die Walkure was written by Richard Wagner. Wagners msot famous part of Die Walkure is Part two which features "Ride of the Valkyries". Love blossoms between Siegmund and the unhappily married Sieglinde. Believing that this union holds the key to lifting the ring’s curse, Wotan instructs his Valkyrie daughter Brünnhilde to defend Siegmund in the ensuing duel.Ericka demands the couple to be killed.Brunnhilde defies the gods and protects Seigmund. This doesn't end well for Brunnhilde. -
American Civil War
While the Revolution created the United States, the Civil War determined what kind of nation it would. Thus making the American Civil War a central event in America's history.This war was to figure out if the U.S would be a dissolvable confederation of sovereign states or an indivisble nation with a sovereign national government.It also figured out if the nation was to be born of a declaration that all men were created with an equal right to liberty or exist as the largest slaveholding country. -
Transcontinental Railroad
In 1862, the Pacific Railroad Act chartered the Central Pacific and the Union Pacific Companies. This Act tasked them with building a transcontinental railroad that would link the United Stated from East to West. This took seven years for the two companies to meet. They raced toward eachother from Sacramento, California to Omaha, Nebraska and finally met on May 10, 1869 at Promontory, Utah. -
Spanish American War
The war originated with the Cuban struggle for independence from Spain. This conflict between the United Stated and Spain ended Spanish colonial rule in the America's. The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1898. Spain's defeat made them focus on its domestic needs which lead to much needed economic development. United State's victory gave them world power and a role into international politics. -
