    The Roman Empire began to decline from about the 2nd or 3rd century however the final nail in the coffin was when the last Emperor of the Western Roman Empire, Romulus Augustus was deposed by Odoacer, a Germanic chieftain. This led to the loss of a great amount of knowledge and began what is called the dark ages.
