Canadians entered the front lines

On April 22, 1915 Ypres saw the first use of poison gas. It was known as a technological breakthrough in modern warfare.

On the first day of the battle, the British forces had already taken over 57 000 casualties in just a few hours.

The Somme or "Das Blutbad" (blood bath) as the Germans called it began on July 1rst in 1916.

The first tank to ever be introduced was the British Mark I tank during the Battle of the Somme. It was introduced by the British and the French. Sadly, it did not have the impact they desired.

The battle of the Somme ended on November 18, 1916. Although the battle was over, the war continued. Many commanders had wished the war would be over after this battle but that was not the case.
There was over 623 907 allied deaths and 660 000 German deaths -
Military leaders realized going "over the top" was a bad idea. General Arthur Currie had come up with a new approach for the Canadian forces which lead them to victory.
Goal: To hurl shells and continue to fire them even as the Canadians left their trenches. Timing, discipline and training was key. -
Vimy Ridge had just begun on Arpil 9th, 1917. This battle had begun on the same month Canada became its own country.

Passchendaele was also known as the Third Battle of Ypres.

Canadian corps were ordered to the Passchendaele front , east of Ypres during mid-October.
British attempted to drive Germans out of Northen France of Flanders and North Ypres. Their objective was to take out German-Ports and sink their subs and U-boats.
Troops failed to push the Germans back.
General Haig ordered the Canadians to make a big push for victory -
By mid-November General Arthur Currie had attained victory with over 150,000 Canadians lost. Due to the huge amount of loss soldiers, the morale of the soldiers had been pulled down.
At this point, America had joined the war just as the Conscription Crisis loomed in Canada to replace soldiers. -
World War 1 had finally ended on November 11th which is now known as remembrance day.
