Winston Churchill became the new prime minister of Britian in 1940. -
Battle of Britian
Hitler had a plan to invade Britian, code named Operation Sea Lion. This battle was fought in the air with air. 1,700 German planes were lost. Hitler decided to postpone the invasion indefinitely. -
Lend Lease Act
This act allowed President Roosevelt to sell or lend war supplies to any country whose defense was vital to the safety of the United States -

During FDR's speech mentioned "four freedoms"; freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from far-- all threatened by the Nazi and Japenese militarism. -

American military base attacked by the Japenese. Japan's navy sailed to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The invasion included 6 aircrafts carriers, 360 airplanes, battleships and cruisers, and many submarines. The Japanese dropped many bombs by surprise and devastated America. -

The war production board was formed to oversee the conversion of peacetime industry to industry. -
Japanese Internment
Internments were temporary imprisonment of members of a specific group. United States government imprisoned about 120,000 Japanese Americans. The thought of Americans with Japanese ancestary committing treason was the result of the Japanese internment camps. -
Battle of Midway
Turning point if the whole war. Japanese tried to attack an important naval base, at Midway, failed and the Americans won, stopping the powerful Japanese navy. -

government-controlled limits on the amount of certain goods that civilians could buy during wartime. -
Charles Nimitz
Nimitz was the commander of the United States Navy. While turning the tide in the Pacific, Nimitz sent the only available aircraft carriers to Midway. -
Stalingrad
Stalingrad is a city in Russia. The Battle of Stalingrad was the turning point of the war in Europe. It ended Hitlers plans for dominating Europe. -
Manhattan Project
Scientist creates an atomic bomb which cost several billion dollars and employed tens of thousands of people. The bomb was tested in New Mexico, the flash of the light was visible almost 180 miles away. -
Casablanca Conference
In Casablanca Morrocco. They met to plan for the Allies, wanted the Axis Powers to surrender. Was with Roosevelt, Churchill, and other important representatives. -
Women's Army Corps (WAC)
The WAC provided clerical workers, truck drivers, instructors, and lab technicians for the United States Army. Over 150,000 women volunteered for service. -

11,000 planes prepared to destroy German communication and transportation networks and soften Nazi beach defenses. At Omaha, Germans were prepared to fight with dug out trenches and small concrete pillboxs with heavy artillery. The objective was to soften upthe Nazi power. -

Japanese Americans went to court to seek their rights. In 1944, the Supreme Court upheld the government's wartime internment policy. -
Battle of the Bulge
Hitler ordered a counterattack. The counterattack was known as the Battle of the Bulge, which almost succeeded. The Germans caught the Allies by surprise which created the bulge in the American line. The Allies couldn't see because of the weather. However, when skies cleared, the allied bombers attacked German positions. -
Iwo Jima
23,000 American marines were prepared to fight and take Iwo Jima. After 36 days they had taken the island. -
Okinawa
Had an air base that if we took it, would help us invade Japan. We lost many men battling, Said to be one of the deadliest battles. -

Prosecuted Nazis for war crimes. 21 defendants were leaders of the Third Reich and aarchitects of the Holocaust. -
