Germany invaded neutral Belgium and thus larger allies such as Britain and France got involved.
Britain goes to war so does Canada, because Canada is an ally of England. -
Angry French and Participation
By 1917 there were less volunteers and Conscription (Mandatory involvement, any who are fit, must participate) was implemented.
This angered the French. -
Womens Rights
Women obtain the right to vote in Federal election. First only family to forces members 1917, then all in 1918. -

People were buying shares in companies on borrowed money, when debts were called in the stocks plummeted!

Communism: The gouvernment controls and owns everything. Everyone is equal and set wages & prices for everything.
Socialism: The State would intervene. Key industries and social services operated by the State.
Facism: Dictator. Rule through force & propoganda. Effected in Spain, Italy (Musollini) and Germany (Hitler) -

The 1930’s are characterized as the Great Depression.There was little to no money for most. Families spent as little as possible. Massive lay-offs occured (Losing their job). -

Duplessis... The original Seperatist
From 1944 to 1959. He loved the rural living (the country) because they followed the same things he did. He gave them roads and electricity. The Roman Catholic Church
It continued to control education, hospitals, orphanages, and welfare services. He promoted the RCC and it's values. -

Duplessis adopted the Fleur-de-lis as Quebec's flag in 1948 -
Bad boy Duplessis
They accuse Duplessis of opposing social progress and of serving American interests rather than the interests of Quebec workers. because of this there were numerous strikes in Quebec. -

Duplessis belived rural life was closer to his and belived in the church (The values). He brought paved roads and electricity to those rural areas to help bring more there. -

The Quiet Revolution, a riotless change. This was fast and far-reaching process of social, economic and political reform in Quebec. This took place in the 1960s. -
New Features
Hydro-Quebec became government owned, Trans-Canada expanded, and the Montreal Metro was created. Parent Committee, free public school till 16, MEQ created, government controls education, Ministry of Education de Québec = church is no longer in charge of education. -

Hello Bill
Bill 63, passed by the Union National. Didn't calm language debates in Quebec. The French wanted to make French the primary language in public places and at work. The non-francophones resisted. -
October Crisis
The FLQ kidnappes James Cross and Pierre Laporte. The Prime Minister Trudeau used the war measures act, bringing in the army to aid in controle and protection. Hundreds of FLQ members are arrested. Laportes body is found in the trunk of his car, Cross is released. Some memebres of the FLQ (A terrorist organization) go to Cuba. -

Bill 22. Made French the "Official Language" in Quebec. This wansn't very succesfull either! the Anglophones voted for the Union National in 1976, eventauly creating the PQ -

Leader of the PQ, Rene Levesque felt so strongly about the seperation of Quebec from Canada he held a Referendum. 60% voted No. -
Independance... no not Quebec
To unify the country Pierre Elliot Trudeau met with the provincial leaders to discuss a method of patriating the constitution, and assuring full independence from Great Britain, all the provinces agreed except Quebec but the Constitution Act and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms went ahead anyways in 1982. (To this day Quebec has not signed this constitution) -
Fixing the broken Q
Under Prime Minister Brian Mulroney the federal government tried to organize a package that would satisfy Quebec and the other provinces. -

Meech Lake Accord. Written with various reforms but it was denied by two provinces Newfoundland and Manitoba. -
OKA!!!
Mohawk warriors established road blocks on the borders to their reserves in Oka just outside Montreal, when a golf course wanted to expand its 9 holes onto native land. The natives militarily organized themselves and the Canadian Forces were called in to handle the situation.
The Oka crisis lasted 78 days.
The Charlottetown Accord was created to deal with these issues. -

Charlottetown Agreement. Sought to do the same (including recognize aboriginal and Quebec rights). -
Parizeau's Oui ou Non
Another referendum was held in 1995 , this time it was led by Jacques Parizeau. With even closer results 50.6% against, and 49.4% for, only 50% + 1% is needed to separate. -
Future Concerns
Older populace and fewer children. A lot of refugees, because they help the economy. Urban Population is larger than Rural Population. Increase in international business and markets. Technology and transport increase. Struggles on reserves with First Nations. Power struggle between State and Media (Linguistic, Environmentalists, Social Justice)
