Industrial Revolution
A period of time when many countries made technological advancements and grew their industries. This ended with some countries being more advanced than others and having better weapons, allowing them to easily take over other nations. -
Opium Wars
This was a war between the British and Chinese. The British were trading tea with China but not making any money from them, to fix this they started giving China opium. To try and stop this China went to war with them. This relates to Imperialism because the war ended with the British controlling China. 1839- 1842. -
Treaty of Nanjing
This treaty ended the Opium Wars and is the first of the unequal treaties. Britain gained many benefits from it but China was hurt by this. The treaty forced China into imperial international law. -
Suez Canal Construction
This was the first canal to connect the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, allowing ships to travel through easily. This relates to imperialism because the mother countries in Europe used this to easily access and trade with their colonies/ imperial nations. 1859- 1869. -

Meiji Restoration
This was a period of time in which imperial rule was restored in Japan. This was a period of rapid change in which Japan advanced into a modern, industrialized, democratic nation. This connects to imperialism because Japan did this to escape their unequal treaty and stand up to the European mother countries. -

Scramble for Africa
Africa had many natural resources and raw materials that the European countries all wanted. They ended up all fighting for what parts of Africa each country could get. They all wanted to make parts of Africa their imperial nations so they could get the resources from them. -
Berlin Conference
All of the European nations had a meeting to decide which countries would get which parts of Africa. African nations had no part in this meeting and Africa was split up randomly and taken advantage of, making this an example of imperialism. 1884-1885. -
Fashoda Incident
This incident was a confrontation between France and Britain that occurred in Sudan. This is related to Imperialism because the incident was due to the fact that the two were having territorial disputes over their colonies in Africa. July-November 1898. -
Boer War
The war was a series of conflicts between the British Empire and the South African Boers (original settlers/ first generation of colonizers) over British influence in the region. The Boers won the first war but the British won the second. This connects to Imperialism because the British were trying to take over South Africa and control what the Boers could do. 1880-1881 (first Boer War) and 1899- 1902 (second Boer War). -
Russo-Japanese War
Both Russia and Japan, who wanted to assert its dominance, wanted to expand their nations. They ended up fighting over Manchuria, the Korean Peninsula, and the Yellow Sea after Japan made an attack on Russia to start the war. This relates to Imperialism because they were both trying to dominate other regions of the world and Japan was trying to assert their dominance in East Asia. 1904-1905.
