  • Proclamation of Neutrality

    In 1793 George Washington issued the Proclamation of Neutrality. This proclamation of neutrality was advocated for by Washington to allow the U.S. to stay as a neutral party in all foreign conflicts.
  • XYZ Affair

    The XYZ affair occurred when President John Adams sent American diplomats to meet with the French to ease tensions. However, French officials wanted payment from the Americans before meeting with them. This insistment of payment from the French angered Americans and the negations from the affair fell apart.
  • Convention of 1800

    The covention of 1800 was proposed by John Adams to resolved tensions that had been built from the XYZ Affair. This convention was possibly the only thing keeping the French from not going to War with the U.S.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    The United States bought the louisana Terriorty from the French for 15 Million. This purchase doubled the size of the U.S.
  • The Embargo Act

    President Thomas Jefferson passed the Embargo Act in 1807. Jefferson put the Embargo Act in place to help prevent the U.S. from getting involved in foreign affairs. The act stopped the U.S. from trading with France and Britain, which were currently at war with each other at the time.
  • War of 1812

    The War of 1812 was fought consisted of fighting between the U.S. and Britain. This fighting was caused by the British's impressment of American citizens.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    The Treaty of Ghent was signed in December of 1814. This treaty was signed in response to the war that had been going on between the U.S. and Britain due to the impressment of American citizens onto British ships. The treaty did not stop the impressment of the U.S. citizens, but it did return land won and lost during the war effort.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    After the war in 1812 ended the U.S. entered a period known as an era of Good Feelings, during this era in 1823 James Monroe issued the Monroe Doctrine. The Monroe Doctrine stated that U.S. wouldn't tolerate interference from Europe in their indepent affairs.
