Trust vs. Mistrust
Lena, just 8 months old, cried often but was always comforted by her mother’s gentle touch and consistent care. Over time, she began smiling more, feeling secure in her world. This stage is about learning to trust caregivers to meet basic needs. If babies are cared for consistently, they develop trust. If not, they may feel mistrust, fear, and insecurity in the world around them. -
Identity vs. Role Confusion
At 16, Lena joined the school’s art club and discovered a passion for painting. She experimented with styles and started expressing her beliefs through her work, forming her own sense of identity. In this stage, teens explore who they are and what they believe. Successfully doing so leads to identity. Failing to figure it out leads to role confusion and uncertainty about their future path. -
Generativity vs. Stagnation
At 43, Lena opened a community art studio to mentor young artists. She felt fulfilled giving back and helping others grow. She saw her work as meaningful and lasting. This stage is about contributing to the next generation and society. Generativity means feeling useful and productive. Stagnation means feeling disconnected or that your life lacks purpose.
