On July 21, 1978, the Plenary of the Congress approved the Spanish Constitution, which was
ratified by a large majority in a referendum on December 6, 1978, and the democratic period began in Spain. -

GOVERNMENTS OF UCD (1979-1982)
Governments of Adolfo Suarez and Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo.
The general elections in March 1979 were won by the UCD party, appointing Adolfo Suárez González as President of the Government. After the resignation of Adolfo Suarez, due to serious economic and unemployment problems in Spain, in 1981 Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo (UCD) replaced him as President. -

UCD won the elections and Adolfo Suarez became the president of the first government after the approval of the constitution. -

My father began the 3-year Bachillerato Unificado Polivalente (BUP) in Valladolid. Afterwards he completed the 1-year Curso de Orientación Universitaria (COU), before entering the University. -
23-F attempted coup d'etat
On February 23, 1981, the Teniente Coronel Tejero carried out a coup d'état in order to end the incipient democracy, which failed. -

SOCIALIST GOVERNMENTS OF FELIPE GONZALEZ (1982-1996)
In 1982 the PSOE won the elections with an absolute majority, and Felipe González Márquez was appointed President of the Government. From then on there were 4 consecutive social governments headed by Felipe González, until 1996. They obtained majority in the elections of 1986, 1989 and 1993. The socialist governments (1982-1996) carried out a series of highly relevant measures in social, health and education matters. -
Spain enters NATO
On May 30, 1982, Spain became the sixteenth member of the North Atlantic Treaty
Organization (NATO). The entrance in NATO had the rejection of many social sectors and of the opposition, particularly the PCE and the PSOE. In January 1986, the socialist government led by Felipe González held a referendum on remaining in the NATO. Surprisingly PSOE strongly encouraged people to vote for 'YES', despite being part of the opposition for years. -

Felipe González Márquez was proclaimed President of the Government by the Congress after the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) won the general elections of October 28, 1982. -
MY DAD: University in Madrid
My father began University at an Engineering School in Madrid, since this training did not exist in many other Autonomous Communities yet. -
Spain enters the EEC
On June 12, 1985, Spain and Portugal signed the Treaty of Accession to the European Economic Community, which became effective on January 1, 1986. -
Spanish economic crisis of 1988
ECONOMIC CRISIS OF SPAIN OF 1988
◀ In 1988 Spain suffered a serious economic crisis as a result of the oil crisis and major restructuring in various industrial sectors. The socialist government had to face a general strike called by the two majoritarian unions. -
MY DAD: Military service Zaragoza
My father finishes the Compulsory Military Service in Zaragoza as alférez de complemento. The compulsory military service was subsequently eliminated by moving to a professional army. Even then, many people declared themselves conscientious objectors and replaced them with social services. -
MY DAD: First job
My father got his first job in Valladolid in an engineering company dedicated to research and technology in sugar beet. -
Olimpic Games BCN and Expo-Sevilla
In that year Spain is shown to the world through the Universal Exposition of Seville 1992, popularly known as "Expo'92” and the 1992 Olympic Games held in the city of Barcelona. -
Maastrich Treaty
On February 7, 1992 the MAASTRICHT TREATY was signed, the Treaty establishing the EU, which allowed integration and solidarity between the Member States and their nationals (European citizenship), and laid the foundations for a future monetary union for all its members. -
MY DAD: Visit to the Expo "Sevilla 92"
My father visited the 1992 Universal Exposition in Seville. He has the memory that it was very hot, and water was sprayed on the streets to suffocate it. There were more than 100 pavilions. -
MY DAD: Marriage
In October 2015 my mother and father got married and started my family. -

GOVERNMENTS OF PP - AZNAR (1996-2004)
The general elections of March 1996 were won by the Popular Party, and José María Aznar López was appointed President of the Government. The first objective of the government was to recover the economically, in order to fulfil the Maastricht treaty and to be able to enter the Euro. Spain adopted the euro as its currency in 2002 along with 11 other EU states. -

On May 5, 1996 Aznar was appointed President of the Government. The Popular Party (PP) won the general elections of March 3, 1996, but he did not reach an absolute majority, he needed the support, by prior agreements, of the Catalan, Basque and Canarian nationalist parties. -
ETA murders Miguel Ángel Blanco
The councilman of PP Miguel Blanco was kidnapped by ETA in the Basque Country. Despite the massive demonstrations against ETA and the general rejection of terrorism nationally and internationally, he was murdered two days later. -
Creation of the Euro Zone
Spain is one of the 11 founding countries of the European Economic and Monetary Union (Euro Zone) that would promote the introduction of a single currency, the EURO. -
MY DAD: First child
In September the first daughter of the family was born.
