Francisco Vázquez de Coronado starts on an expedition into New Mexico to explore and find the mystical Seven Golden Cities of Cibola. This is important because it was the first Europeans to be in New Mexico. -

Name "New Mexico" Termed
The name Nuevo México was first used by a seeker of gold mines named Francisco de Ibarra who explored far to the north of Mexico in 1563 and reported his findings as being in "a New Mexico" This is important because if New Mexico wouldnt be New Mexico if it wasnt called New Mexico. -
Onate Becomes Governor
Juan de Oñate becomes New Mexicos first governor. Appointed to the position. This is important because Onate was a good governor and established colonies and built infastructure in New Mexico. -
First Permanent European Settlement
Juan de Oñate officially established San Juan de los Caballeros colony, the first permanent European settlement in the future state of New Mexico on the Rio Grande near Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo. Important because It showed that Europeans could successfully live in New Mexico. -
Santa Fe Founded
The settlement of Santa Fe was established at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the southernmost subrange of the Rocky Mountains, around 1608. Important because Santa Fe later becomes the capitol of New Mexico. -
Pueblo Revolt
The pueblo revolt forces all spanish out of New Mexico for 12 years. Santa Fe is occupied by Pueblo Indians. Important because it showed the worls that the native americans could fight for there land. -
Spanish Reconquest
In July 1692, Diego de Vargas returned to Santa Fe. De Vargas surrounded the city before dawn and called on the Indians to surrender, promising clemency if they would swear allegiance to the King of Spain and return to the Christian faith. The Indian leaders gathered in Santa Fe, met with De Vargas, and agreed to peace. On September 14, 1692, de Vargas proclaimed a formal act of repossession. -
Albuquerque Founded
While developing Santa Fe as a trade center, the returning settlers founded Albuquerque in 1706 from existing surrounding communities. Naming it for the viceroy of New Spain, Francisco Fernández de la Cueva, 10th Duke of Alburquerque. Important because Albuquerque becomes New Mexicos largest city and opens New Mexico to new settlers. -
New Mexico gets a Bishop
In 1851 the Vatican appointed Jean-Baptiste Lamy (1814–1888), a French cleric, as bishop of the diocese of Sante Fe. Important because it shows that New Mexico was now being seen by the world. It also made New Mexico look like a more attractive place to live. -
NM Ruled by Mexico
As a part of New Spain, the claims for the province of New Mexico passed to independent Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. The Republic of Texas claimed the portion east of the Rio Grande when it seceded from Mexico in 1836. Important because it added culture to New Mexico and a government change is important. -
First NM Newspaper
The first newspaper in New Mexico was El Crepusculo de la Libertad ("The Dawn of Liberty"), a Spanish-language paper founded in 1834 at Santa Fe. The Santa Fe Republican, founded in 1847, was the first English-language newspaper. -

Santa Fe Becomes Capitol
New Mexico established its capital at Santa Fe in 1851. The U.S. territorial New Mexico census of 1850 found 61,547 people living in all the territory of New Mexico. -
Gadsden Purchase
The United States acquired the southwestern boot heel of the state and southern Arizona below the Gila river in the mostly desert Gadsden Purchase of 1853, which was related to the construction by the US of a transcontinental railroad. -
Battle of Glorieta Pass
Confederate power in the New Mexico Territory was effectively broken after the Battle of Glorieta Pass in 1862. However, the Confederate territorial government continued to operate out of Texas, and Confederate troops marched under the Arizona flag until the end of the war. Additionally, over 8,000 troops from New Mexico Territory served the Union. -
New Mexico Becomes a State
On January 6th 1912 New Mexico was accepted into the United States. -
Catron Becomes First Senator
Upon New Mexico's 1912 entry to the union as the 47th state, Catron was elected the state's first senator by a wide margin on the merit of his efforts to admit the state. He was sworn in on March 27, 1912. -

Pancho Villa Attacks Columbus New Mexico
In 1916 Mexican military leader Pancho Villa led an invasion across the border into Columbus, New Mexico, where they burned some homes and killed several Americans. -
Camp Cody Established
During World War I, Camp Cody was an army training camp for the National Guard units from North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota and Iowa. Soldiers received basic training there before leaving for the war in France. The different National Guard units together formed the 34th Infantry Division and were nicknamed the "Sandstorm Division," a name based on the camp's desert climate. -
USS New Mexico Commisioned
USS New Mexico (BB-40) was a battleship in service with the United States Navy from 1918 to 1946. She was the lead ship of a class of three battleships. New Mexico was extensively modernized between 1931 and 1933 and saw service during World War II both in the Atlantic and Pacific theatres. After her decommissioning she was scrapped in 1947. New Mexico was the first US Navy ship named for the U.S. state of New Mexico. -
Womens Right to Vote
The suffrage movement worked hard to get women the vote but were stymied by the conservatism of the politicians and the Catholic Church. New Mexico's legislature was one of the last to ratify the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920. Soon there there was a dramatic increase in political participation by both Anglo and Hispanic women as well as strong mobilization efforts by the major parties to gain the support of the female voters -
Indian Market Started
In 1922 Edgar L. Hewett started the weekly tradition of the Indian Market in Snata Fe. Started to promote tourism and the thriving artist community in Santa Fe, the market was a huge success and continues to occurr every week to this day. -
KOB Radio Station Founded
First New Mexico radio station, KOB, begins transmitting. Bringing News and Events to New Mexicans in a way that was faster and easier then getting a news paper. -
Oil Found on Navajo Reservation
1923-24 Oil is discovered on the Navajo Reservation. -
Gila Wilderness Established - 550,000 Acres
Gila Wilderness is established in southwest New Mexico with more than 550,000 acres. Used for recreation and outdoor activities. -

Great Depression Hits New Mexico
The great depression started in 1929 and was a worldwide economic crisis. It effected poor New Mexicans but wasnt as bad as other parts in the country. This is due to many wealthy citizens residing in Sanat Fe. They were able to still provide jobs to most of the citizens keeping the economy somewhat constant. -
Carlsbad Cavern Established
Carlsbad Caverns made National Park in 1930. This is a large natural cave and one of the largest in the world. Formed over millions of years of erosion and dripping water the cave host a beautiful guided tour, and is a popular tourist destination in New Mexico. -
White Sands National Monument Established
White Sands National Monument is established in 1933. Now home to white sands missle base, many important millitary technologies have been tested here throuout the years. Some of these include the worlds first atomic bomb. -
"Land of Enchantment" Coined
New Mexico becomes known as the “Land of Enchantment” The words “Land of Enchantment” adorns automobile license plates and is used frequently in state publications to promote tourism. -
State Court Gets a Building
For the first 25 years of statehood, the state Supreme Court operated in cramped quarters in the Capitol building. Not until 1937 as a result of a Public Works Administration (PWA) New Deal project, did the Supreme Court get its own building. -
Route 66 Completed
Paving of Route 66 from Chicago to LA is completed, new road from Santa Rosa to Albuquerque bypasses Santa Fe. This is because the governor was very angry and changed the route last minute. -
New Mexico State Fair Opens
First New Mexico State Fair opens in new location in Albuquerque after being shut down since 1917. The state fair continues to this day and is a fun event enjoyed by many New Mexicans. -

Pearl Harbor Attacked
Under the command of Admiral Chuichi Nagumo, the attack was devastating in loss of life and damage to the U.S. fleet. At 06:05 on December 7, the six Japanese carriers launched a first wave of 183 aircraft composed mainly of dive bombers, horizontal bombers and fighters. The attacked brought America into WWI and because NM is in America NM was also a part of WWI now. -
United States Joins WWII
On 7 December (8 December in Asian time zones), 1941, Japan attacked British and American holdings with near-simultaneous offensives against Southeast Asia and the Central Pacific.These included an attack on the American fleet at Pearl Harbor, landings in Thailand and Malaya and the battle of Hong Kong. Navajo Establish "Code Talkers"
Code talkers are people who talk using a coded language, most notably the 400-500 Native American Marines who served in the United States Marine Corps whose primary job was the transmission of secret tactical messages. Code talkers transmitted these messages over military telephone or radio communications nets using formal or informally developed codes built upon their native languages. -
Manhatten Project Underway
The Manhattan Project was a research and development program by the United States with the United Kingdom and Canada that produced the first atomic bomb during World War II. From 1942 to 1946. With most of the research and testing done in New Mexico it brought jobs to the state and helped New Mexico become a valuabkle asset to the United States. -
Albuquerque Army Air Base Renamed
Albuquerque Army Air Base renamed Kirtl and Field, latter calld Kirtland AIr Force Base. This AFB provides New Mexicans with jobs and brings millitary funding to the state. It also helped grow the Albuquerque International Sunport and the airforce base shares runways with the airport. -
National Guards Men Captured at Bataan
1,800 New Mexican National Guards men captured in Bataan by the Japenese in the Philipines. Along with 80,000 other Allied soldiers. Only about half of them survived to the end of the war in 1945. This event helped bring the United States and New Mexico into the war. -
USS Santa Fe Luanched
USS Santa Fe (CL-60), a Cleveland class light cruiser, is launched. Santa Fe was laid down on 7 June 1941 by New York Shipbuilding Co. of Camden, New Jersey, launched on 10 June 1942, sponsored by Miss Caroline T. Chavez, and commissioned on 24 November 1942, Captain Russell S. Berkey in command. USS Santa Fe fought in WWII and helped bring the united states to victory. -
Two AFB Established in New Mexico
Holloman Air Force Base established near Alamogordo and Cannon Air Force Base near Clovis. During World War II, the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) established numerous airfields in New Mexico for training pilots and aircrews of USAAF fighters and bombers. Most of these airfields were under the command of Fourth Air Force or the Army Air Forces Training Command. -
Santa Fe Japanese Internment Camp Established
Established in 1943 these camps held people of Japanese decendant durring World War II. Even though these people were US citizens. The government feared that some may be spies or rally against the government in favor of Japan. It was justified though because of the thousands of Americans killed durring WWII and the threat the Japanese posed. -
New Mexico gets A Second Congresional Seat
New Mexico gets a second U. S. Congressional Seat, filled by Antonio M. Fernández (other Congressman is Clinton Anderson). This helped increase the power New Mexico had on decisions made by the government. -
José P. Martinez Awarded Medal of Honor
José P. Martinez, a Taos native who dies fighting in the Aleutian Islands, is the first Hispanic Medal of Honor recipient in World War II. One of the highest awards awarded by the US Millitary. -
First Nuclear Device Detonated
Trinity was the code name of the first detonation of a nuclear device. This test was conducted by the United States Army on July 16, 1945, in the Jornada del Muerto desert about 35 miles southeast of Socorro, New Mexico, at the new White Sands Proving Ground, which incorporated the Alamogordo Bombing and Gunnery Range. (The site is now the White Sands Missile Range.) The date of the test is usually considered to be the beginning of the Atomic Age. The image is 16 milliseconds after detonation. -
First Nuclear Device used in Combat
"Little Boy" was the codename for the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 by the Boeing B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay, piloted by Colonel Paul Tibbets of the 393rd Bombardment Squadron, Heavy, of the United States Army Air Forces. It was the first atomic bomb to be used as a weapon. The second, the "Fat Man", was dropped three days later on Nagasaki. -

White Sands Missle Range Established
White Sands Missile Range is a rocket range of almost 3,200 square miles in parts of five counties in southern New Mexico. The largest military installation in the United States, WSMR includes the Oscura Range and the WSMR Otero Mesa bombing range. WSMR and the 600,000-acre McGregor Range Complex at Fort Bliss to the south, form a contiguous swath of territory for military testing. -
100 German Engineers Arrive at Fort Bliss
This started the testing of rockets at White Sands. It showed that New Mexixco was important to the United States in millitay research. The German Engineers had experience building the German V2 Rockets. They helped the Americans design and build their own rockets and missles. -

First Woman Elected to Congress
Georgia Lusk becomes first New Mexico woman to be elected to U. S. Congress. Lusk's defining legacy will ultimately be her impact on the public education of New Mexico. She pulled a failing institution of loosely organized rural community schools right out of the territorial days of the 1890s and into the 20th century. While she did accomplish many other things, including many firsts for women in New Mexico, her impact in changing the way New Mexico public schools work can be felt to this day. -

Roswell Incident Ocurrs
The Roswell UFO Incident, also known simply as Roswell, was a report of an object that crashed near Roswell, New Mexico, in June or July 1947, allegedly an extra-terrestrial spacecraft and its alien occupants. The United States Armed Forces maintains that what was recovered was debris from an experimental high-altitude surveillance balloon. This event brought people and attention to Roswell and New Mexico. -
KOB Becomes TV Station
KOB-TV becomes the first television station between the Mississippi and the West Coast.This lead to the development of more TV stations in New Mexico and on the west coast of America. New Mexico benefited from this. KOB brings news and entertainment to the people of New Mexico. -
Pueblo People Gain the Right to Vote
Miguel Trujillo Sr. of Isleta Pueblo is most remembered for making it possible for the tribes of New Mexico to vote in state and national elections. On June 14, 1948 Trujillo attempted to register to vote in Los Lunas, near Isleta Pueblo, and was refused by the recorder of Valencia Country. This lead to the movement that let Pueblo People vote. -
Roadrunner Named State Bird
Officially adopted March 16, 1949. It was adopted under the name "Chaparral Bird". In Spanish, it is called "El Correcaminos". The comical roadrunner prefers running to flying and has been clocked at speeds of 15 miles per hour. They are approximately 22 inches in length and their diet consists of insects, lizards, centipedes, mice and snakes. -
Smokey the Bear Rescued
Smokey Bear is a mascot of the United States Forest Service created to educate the public about the dangers of forest fires. An advertising campaign featuring Smokey was created in 1944 with the slogan, "Smokey Says – Care Will Prevent 9 out of 10 Forest Fires". Smokey Bear's later slogan, "Remember... Only YOU Can Prevent Forest Fires", was created in 1947 by the Ad Council. In April 2001, the message was updated to "Only You Can Prevent Wildfires". -
First Green Chile Cheeseburger
In 1952 Blakes Lotaburger in Albuquerque was one of the first places to serve a Green Chile Burger. This is historical because they taste very good and now almost every restruant in New Mexico that sells burgers has a green chile varrient of some type. New Mexicos state question is "Red or Green?" -
Taos Ski Valley is Opened
Taos Ski Valley is a village and alpine ski resort in Taos County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 69 at the 2010 census. Until March 19, 2008, it was one of four ski resorts in America to prohibit snowboarding; officials announced the change several months in advance. The village was originally settled by a group of hearty and adventurous miners in the 1800s, but in 1955 Ernie and Rhoda Blake founded the area as a ski mountain. The village was incorporated in 1996. -
School Segregation Outlawed
In 1957 a law was passed that prohibited segregation in New Mexico Schools. This did not affect most schools though because they were already not segregated. The de-segregation went through with no violence except in one New Mexico town. -
Las Alamos Opens Gates to Public
In 1942, the government used its power of eminent domain to take over the Ranch School and all the remaining homesteads. The Ranch School was paid $225 per acre while the homesteaders were paid only between $7 and $15 per acre. All information about the town was highly classified until the bombing of Hiroshima. The Public was allowed into the town in 1957 and after. -
First Sections of I-40 Opened in New Mexico
The first sections of I-40 are opened in Quay County New Mexico. This starts the 1000+ mile highway through New Mexico that is important for travel, tourism, and economical success. -
First Navajo Elected to State Legislature
First Navajos, Monroe Jymm and James Atcitty, are elected to state legislature in 1964. This shows that New Mexicans are more tolerant then they used to be and is a great step in rights for Navajos in New Mexico. -
Sandia Peak Tramway Opened
At the time the worlds longest single section tramway the sandia peak tramway was opened in 1966 and built by Bell Engineers. It was there most difficult project due to the rocky slope of the Sandia Mountains. -
Blue Lake Returned to Taos Pueblo
President Nixon signed something that gave Blue Lake and 48,000 acres of land back to the Taos pueblo. Blue Lake is a historic and sacred site for the Taos natives. The returning ot the land ends a many year long struggle to get the land back. -
Bless Me, Ultima Published
Rudolfo Anaya Publishes Bless Me, Ultima in 1972. This book is popular in New Mexico and is on many banned book lists. We have studied this in our history class so it must be importent to the culture of New Mexico. -
Balloon Fiesta Begins
The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is a yearly festival of hot air balloons that takes place in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA during early October. The balloon fiesta is a nine day event, and has around 750 balloons. The event is the largest hot air balloon festival in the world. -
Micro-Soft First Office in Albuquerque
Bill Gates and Paul Allen establish first “Micro-Soft” office in Albuquerque to work with Bill Roberts and his Altair computer, later register name “Microsoft” with the New Mexico Secretary of State. Bill gates later becomes the richest man in the world with around 55 billion USD. This picture is Bill Gates after he was arrested in Albuquerque. -
John Pinto take seat in Senate
John Pinto, trained as a Navajo code-talker, takes seat as a New Mexico State Senator, a post in which he still serves. He was a navajo code talker during WWII and still serves in the senate today. Very long. -

Prison Riot
New Mexico State Pen experiences a riot. 33 inmates and guards are killed and over 200 people are injured. The riot was blamed on poor conditions in the prison that housed 1,130 people but was only built for 900. Some convicts only recieved food every other day. -
Interstate 40 completed in NM
In 1981 the final sections of interstate 40 are completed in New Mexico. This interstate runs east to west and brings industry and tourism to New Mexico. Interstate 40 is one of three important Interstates in New Mexico including 1-25 which intersects I-40 in New Mexicos largest cuty Albuquerque. -
New Mexico gets a third congress seat
New Mexico gets a third congressional seat. New Mexico gets a third U. S. Congressional seat, filled by Bill Richardson (other two are Manuel Luján, Jr., and Joe Skeen) Bill Richardson later becomes the Governor of New Mexico and runs for presidency. -
New Mexico's first Woman Justice
Mary Coon Walters becomes the first woman New Mexico Supreme Court Justice. This event opens the way for other women in the New Mexican goernment such as Suzane Martinez the first Hispanic American Governor in the United States. -

Lechugilla Cave, a few miles from Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, is discovered, it is the 5th largest cave in the world and the deepest in the continental US -
WIPP Opens
the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) near Carlsbad, N.M. is completed. It received its 1st shipment of nuclear waste in 1999. It moves nuclear waste to a secure and less dangerous area that poses a less threatenng threat to society. -
Roswell UFO Museum Opens
The International UFO Museum and Research Center opens in Roswell, New Mexico. This museum brings a lot of tourist to roswell and New Mexico. They also do research on aliens and supposed wreckage found at a UFO crash site -

Death Penalty Abolished
In 2009 voters voted to abolish the death penalty. Governor Bill Richardson signed the bill abolishing the death penalty in New Mexico on March 18. New Mexico now becomes the 15th state to abandon capital punishment and the 3rd in the last 2 years. -
