    The Sherman Antitrust Act was a law designed to prevent big companies from taking over entire industries. Progressives pushed for this law since they agreed that big business needed regulation, and the government should break up these companies to restore competition.
  • Roosevelt becomes President

    Roosevelt becomes President
    Theodore Roosevelt became the President of the United States after the assassination of former President William McKinley. During his Presidency Roosevelt promoted progressive reforms to address the economic, social, and political issues of that time.
  • Muller v. Oregon

    Muller v. Oregon
    Muller v. Oregon case upheld laws limiting women's work hours, citing health concerns. This case is tied with progressive ideals because it reflected the focus on using government power to improve social and labor conditions.
  • Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire

    Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire
    During this event 146 factory workers died in a fire. Workers had no place to exit since the one exit was blocked. Therefore, many died in the fire or jumped out of the windows. This led to major changes in workplace safety.
  • 16th Amendment

    16th Amendment
    This amendment allowed the federal government to collect taxes on the incomes of all Americans. The amendment fits into the progressive ideals since many progressive groups believed it was fair for the wealthy to pay for the taxes that had been largely given to the less fortunate or middle class.
  • 17th Amendment

    17th Amendment
    The 17th Amendment explains that each state shall have two senators. They would each get one vote and remain in office for 6 years. This amendment complimented progressivism since it made the government more accountable to the people.
  • Federal Reserve Act

    Federal Reserve Act
    Created the central banking system of the United States. The act addressed many economic concerns and sought to stabilize the economy.
  • Federal Trade Commission

    Federal Trade Commission
    Agency of the United States government whose purpose is to promote fair competition and protect people from unfair business practices. This is closely related to the ideals of the progressive era since progressives actively pushed for fair business practices.
  • 18th Amendment

    18th Amendment
    The 18th amendment banned the sale, manufacture, distribution, and transportation of alcohol in the United States. Progressive reformers pushed for the amendment because they thought it would help public health and the other issues that came with alcohol consumption.
  • 19th Amendment

    19th Amendment
    The 19th amendment granted women the right to vote. The amendment aligns with progressive ideals since it expanded democracy, promoted equality, and addresses social injustices.
