New Orleans Jazz
Where Jazz started. The most charectoristic aspect about New Orleans jazz preformances was the horns joining together in spontaneous counterpart. The horns involved were typically the cornet (or trumpet), trombone, and clarinet. -
First Jazz Recording Made.
This is an event that many people don't really like to mark as monumental for jazz. The recording was made by a white bad name the Original Dixiland Jazz Band. The cover of the record is mocking the racial discource behind jazz by showing dark skined animals playing instruments. A moment that records racisim in the early development in jazz. -
Prohabition of alcohol begins
Even though prohabition was brought on by women, the prohabition makes a larger percent of women start drinking even though they were uncommen in bars before. The prohabition indirectly furthers the cause of jazz. -

Chicago sound is more streamlined with a flashy restless quality. Chigacgo jazz brought the idea that jazz could be romantic and lucerious which was a revelation. Many Chicago jazz preformers came from European descent and they used their ethniticity in the jazz with things like providing minor chords. Chicago brought new notions about swing. -

Harlem served as the spring boerd for so many key developments in African American music during the first half of the twentieth century. Stride was a piano style that required no additional support from other instruments. Stride adopted the extroverted and energetic approach. -

Big Band and the Swing Era
With this instead of isolating instruments, bandleaders show cased entire sections of the instruments, sort of like the jazz version of a classical orcestra. Big Band music was made easy to dance which may be why it was called the "swing period," and around this time period was very very popular playing on most radio stations and new Big Band numbers would have been equivilant to the newest pop song today. -
Kansas City, Missouri becomes the wildest city in America
After an interesting election, kansas city, Missouri becomes quite popular. Many jazz musicians start to move here, and Kansas City creates it's own style of jazz. -
Swedish Jazz band is formed
It is called the Paramount Orcestra. -
First Talking Movie is released, called "The Jazz Singing"
The important thing about this event is that the white person preforming in it was wearing black face which is another representation of the rasicisim around early jazz. -
Federal Agents raid night clubs for alcohol
After a republic governers strict orders on banning alcohol, it is stated that wnyone found with alcohol will be arrested. This event leads to Chicago becoming Jazz's new capitol. -

Kansas City Jazz
This music was infused with a new sense of ease and a carefree feel. In many ways Kansas City Jazz laid the gorundwork for the swing era. Kansas City was an art form of fragile beauty, but at the same time had a trim of masculinity. Turmoil of World War II caused many Kansa City musicians to get drafted and eventually Kansas City ended in 1944. -
Nazi's ban jazz broadcasting
Jazz has always been embraced by society as a symbol of freedom and human rights weither or not that was the original intention. Nazi leaders feared the influence of jazz music along with the Soviet Union. With the rise of the Nazi power, jazz was banned. This can be an example of how powerful jazz is or at least is interprited to be in it's freewillingness. -

Modern Jazz or Bebop
This music was meant to shock and sometimes bewilder the general public. It was not music intended for dancing and although it was fast and upbeat most of the audience would sit still and silently when it was played. Modern Jazz was associated with fringes of society like beatniks and hipsters. Before modern jazz, the term bebop meant a snide, pejorative attitude. Modern was percieved as sounding dangerous and even threatening public morality to some. -

Cool Jazz
Before the end of the 1940's, there was a negative reaction to bebop on both the East and West side that could not be mistaken, this lead to cool jazz which was the exact opposite to bebop as it was relaxed and melodies were not so strongly expressed. Classical composers can be heard in the music, especially since cool was inspired by that music style. Cool jazz tried to reconnect with the traditions of earlier jazz. -

Hard Bop
Although Blue Note Records recorded other styles of jazz, many jazz fans just refer to this a Blue Note Sound. It was "hot" music to warm upCold War ears. Hard bop took a lot from modern, but also took from blues, gospel, and other music that was popular. The rythem sections drew on dancable grooves, the reason modern was perhaps not so popular was because they were purposefully not danceable. -

Avante-Garde/ Free Jazz
Free jazz was an artform that went back to the original african roots of jazz. The music was used for political activism in black rights. It was called "free" because it broke the last barriers of jazz, continued allegiance to metrical rythems, constraints on the chords, and maintenance of a tonal center. Free jazz is free from all the previous imparted structer. Free jazz could not be transcribed with the conventional western notion. -

Classical/World Music/Jazz fusion
Also known as ECM sound, this style had a boldness to it that could come across in many ways. There would be long stretches were instead of the custom swing syncopation or bent blues notes that jazz had, there was chopinque melodies, quasi-medival drones, jittery ostinatos, austere diatonic hymns, or a host of other attitudes and techniques. Although it may seem that this drastic mix of styles would be choppy mix match, this style is very strong in cooherently blending sound. -

Jazz/ Rock Fusion
As Jazz become more sophistacted and more accepted by colleges, jazz started looking for something to make it relevent to the younger demograpic. By using electric gutiars, basses, and pianos, jazz infused rock aspects into it. Rock fusion was very popular and paved the road for fusing music in the future. The attitide of fusion eventually got lost as it transfered to more smooth sounding and people copied that, but the sound was very strong during the late 60's and 70's. -

Neoclassical is a word that discribes wresteling in keeping ballence between the responsabilities of the past and pushing ahead towards the future. It was coined for a spefific style of jazz from a music critic. -

This was the stage and style of trying to be relevent and responsible with the past styles while still trying to add new renivations. Because this style is so broad, it is had to describe, but most postmoderism is deliberatly playful and jesting. -
